By Stephen Dinan, founder and CEO of The Shift Network
My beloved wife, Devaa, and I, along with many friends, recently attended the Parliament of World’s Religions in Salt Lake City. We want to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the Parliament for hosting a spectacular event that had 10,000 people from around the world.
One of the overriding messages at the Parliament was the call for people of all religions to live their spiritual values in daily life and to work together to take inspired action to address climate change, racism, violent conflict and other global challenges.
We were being called to create a world that works for all; or, in essence, to co-create “heaven on earth.” (See my Featured Article.)
One of the first people who I have known to openly embrace the idea of creating “heaven on earth” is Martin Rutte, the founder of Project Heaven on Earth. As a corporate consultant, Martin discovered people are guided by a deeper essence to create a better world.
As Martin says, we've all had moments when we have experienced heaven of earth: beauty in nature, love from a friend, generosity from a stranger.... With these moments, we tap into our soul’s wisdom of what’s possible... a thriving global family, united in a peaceful, sustainable civilization.
By focusing on heaven on earth as a tangible and achievable possibility, we can create a new story of what it means to be a human and what it means to be humanity.
This is why we are partnering with Martin Rutte to launch the first-ever Co-Creating Heaven on Earth summit (November 3–5, 2015) — to provide practical ways to move toward fulfilling this bold, beautiful dream of a planet that works for all. (To register free, click here.)
In this edition of The Catalyst, we have thought provoking articles by Martin Rutte and Tim Kelley. We also have a piece by Rory McEntee, Mirabai Starr, Kurt Johnson, Rick Clugston and Adam Bucko about how science is challenging religion by proving people are hard-wired for altruistism.
In our Member Profile, Nathan Crane takes a hard look at co-creating heaven on earth through the lens of sustainability. Nathan is launching The Search for Sustainability Series (November 1–12, 2015), a free online series that examines “the tragic and crucial emergencies going on in the world and how we might be able to avoid all of this disaster and thrive in a sustainable way.” (See Featured Media.)
Our other Member Profile is from Shift’s beloved Nadirah Adeye who shares what heaven on earth is to her as an inspired mother. For the Shift Philanthropy, we are continuing with our deep commitment to the 125th Memorial of the Wounded Knee Massacre. We invite you to stand with us in supporting our Indigenous brothers and sisters in creating healing ceremonies on this historic occasion.
Our Featured Artist comes to us from James O’Dea. When asked what musician inspires heaven on earth, he immediately referred to the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams that circled the world. (See Featured Media.)
Finally, for people in the San Francisco Bay Area, we invite you to two events: celebrate All Hallow’s Eve with The Shift Network and Evolutionary Collective on October 30, 2015 – click here; and, join acclaimed voice pioneer Chloe Goodchild’s Naked Voice events on October 31, 2015 – click here. Turning Your Dream of Heaven on Earth into Reality
By Martin Rutte
There is a desire, a longing, deep within us, for a world that works. We yearn for the immoral and recurring sufferings of the planet like war, hunger, disease, and poverty not simply to get better — but to end. We want our soul's dream of a world that inspires hope, engagement, and creativity to flourish. To put it simply, we want Heaven on Earth . . . [read more]
The Shorter Path to Heaven on Earth
By Tim Kelley
My buddy Martin Rutte and I have long and wonderful dialogues about the process by which we humans will create Heaven on Earth. It’s a miraculous thing, to be born in a time when such a conversation actually makes sense! Although Martin has spent many more years in this endeavor than I, I do have some important wisdom that has been gifted to me, which I would love to share with you . . . [read more]
When Religions Finally Unite, Heaven on Earth is Inevitable
By Stephen Dinan
A few weeks ago, I was delighted to attend the Parliament of World’s Religions in Salt Lake City with my wife Devaa and our Director of Peace, Philip Hellmich.
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but I came away so heartened by the prospects for our future. Like so many in "new paradigm" or "evolutionary" circles, I've tended to focus more on spiritual and transformational practices rather than religion. What became clear to me at this event was just how wrong-headed that is. In fact, some of our closest allies and deepest support for co-creating a new world come from traditional religions . . . Major Shifts in Science Challenge Religions, and Especially Their Activists
By Rory McEntee, Mirabai Starr, Kurt Johnson, Rick Clugston and Adam Bucko (published first in the Huffington Post)
Pope Francis' May 24, 2015 encyclical, Laudato si', on the state of the earth's environment and humanity's responsibility for action, represents a growing transformational shift in the relationship between science, social justice, progressive secularism, and religious consciousness

Creating Heaven on Earth — The Search for Sustainability
By Nathan Crane
As I traveled the country seeking a better way of life — a more meaningful, sustainable, vibrant life — I had deep excitement and profound joy for what I was about to experience. I knew intuitively that what I would learn along my journey could inspire me and many others to live closer to the land and more in harmony with our life’s purpose — but I had no idea how deeply it would shift my entire life and bring me closer to experiencing heaven on earth . . . Heaven on Earth for Me
By Nadirah Adeye
When I initially began the process of responding to the question What does Heaven on Earth look like to me? the response that felt most true was: Heaven on Earth is Spiritual Practice. Heaven on Earth is Service to Others. Heaven on Earth is Self-Care . . . [read more] |

Friends Committee on National Legislation — Building A Pathway to Peace: Annual Meeting, Quaker Public Policy Institute & Lobby Day — November 12–15, 2015 — Washington, DC. Participants will learn how to lobby from FCNL's expert staff; hear from congressional staff and other speakers; connect with people from your state; practice lobbying skills; meet with your representative and senators and hear presentations on peacebuilding. New Book: Subtle Activism: The Inner Dimension of Social and Planetary Transformation —
David Thomas Nicol introduces the concept of “subtle activism” to describe the use of consciousness-based practices like meditation and prayer to support collective transformation, such as global meditation directed toward peaceful resolution of a conflict. Subtle activism represents a bridge between the consciousness movement and the movements for peace, environmental sustainability, and social justice. It is not a substitute for physical action but rather a potentially crucial component of a more integrated approach to social change. To learn more and order a copy, click here.

Pharrell Williams – Happy
By Philip M. Hellmich
When visiting James O’Dea in Crestone, Colorado, I asked him, “What musician inspires ‘heaven on earth.’” James immediately said, “The song Happy, it went viral around the world.” James and I then watched several youtube videos of Pharrell Williams’ song "Happy" being people performed by people in numerous countries. James loves the line in the song, “Happiness is the truth.” Nominated for an Academy Award in 2014, "Happy" hit number one and has topped charts in more than seventy-five countries worldwide. Pharrell is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and fashion designer. To learn more about Pharrell, click here.
