"Declaration of Interdependence"—One More Time
We apologize that this link did not work in our last issue of the Catalyst. You'll recall that it documents the celebration, held on December 22 at Wainwright House in Rye, New York, to commemorate the signing of the "Declaration of Interdependence," which was authored by philosopher Ashok Gangadean.
Women to Dance in a New Epoch of Nonviolence By Byron Belitsos, Managing Editor
As this new era dawns, a number of vital social reform movements are sweeping our planet. In the coming weeks we will cover some of those that we find most inspiring. The first is Eve Ensler's spectacular "One Billion Rising" movement to stop violence against women, now with thousands of organizational affiliates worldwide. "One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime," according to Ensler, who is best know for her play Vagina Monologues. "Ending violence against women is as important as ending poverty, or AIDs or global warming." She goes on to proclaim at her site:
One Billion Women Violated Is An Atrocity.
One Billion Women Dancing Is A Revolution.
The site introduces "V-Day" on February 14—a day when millions of women will dance in public events worldwide. It's certain to be the world's greatest ever dancing occurrence! Our own "I am birthing" video contest was in part inspired by the "I am rising" video contest that Ensler is offering through her site. A representative set of these "I am rising" videos can be found here, and one that struck me especially is the video [see above] submitted by Ai-jen Poo, founder of Domestic Workers United, an organization of nannies, housekeepers, and elderly caregivers that was instrumental in New York state passing the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights—the first law in the United States to guarantee domestic workers overtime pay, three days' paid leave, and legal protections from harassment and discrimination. Some of these women who are domestic workers organized by Ai-jen Poo are seen dancing with her in this video.
Remembering Martin Luther King's "Mighty Stream"
We who celebrate a new Birth cannot let this week's birthday of Martin Luther King pass without commemorating this landmark event. It was of King that the Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, author of the landmark study entitled The Prophets, said: "Where in America do we hear a voice like the voice of the prophets of Israel? Martin Luther King is a sign that God has not forsaken the United States of America. God has sent him to us. His presence is the hope of America." In memory of Dr. King's prophetic contribution to the new era, enjoy this excerpt from a biographical sketch about Martin King, authored by Rev. Osagyefo Sekou, which appeared on King's January 21 birthday in Truthout.org.
Birthing a New Dawn in Byron Bay By Katharine and Makasha Roske
The Catalyst is delighted to offer you this important piece by two veteran collaborators with Barbara: Katharine and Makasha Roske. This couple first helped link Barbara to the UPLIFT Festival in Australia, where she performed the "Theater of Our Birth" on December 19 to kick off the Birth events. Katharine and Makasha were the conveners of the huge Syncon that followed Barbara's presentation, as well as the important EvolveBoulder hub. This essay by these distinguished activists for the Birth gives an account of their Byron Bay experience, and much more. Katherine is, by the way, the coauthor of The Co-Creator's Handbook, a key text in our work.
On the morning of December 22, as the rose-tinted golden sun emerged from the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean, hundreds gathered in joyful communion to welcome the dawn of a new era. Byron Bay, Australia, situated at one of the most eastern points in western civilization, was the first continent to welcome the light of this new chapter of global consciousness and cocreation. Indigenous elders, youth activists, artists, musicians, children, and lovers of truth joined hearts with those throughout the world who gathered in major festivals, ceremonies and celebrations. Collectively we were creating a network of light as we honored the birth of a new paradigm in service to the awakening of all life on Mother Gaia. . . [read more]
MoveOn Founder Meets with Tea Party Leader
In yet another significant gesture in the transpartisanship movement, the cofounder of the liberal group known as MoveOn.org, Joan Blades, met recently in her Berkeley living room with Tea Party leader Mark Meckler. Blades has been involved in similar types of projects for about a decade. The occasion was the latest installment of Living Room Conversations, which Blades cofounded with former GOP operative Amanda Kathryn Roman. The day's assigned topic, about which the two apparently found common ground, was "crony capitalism."
