By Stephen Dinan, founder and CEO of The Shift Network
"The world is getting better and better, worse and worse, faster and faster," Velcrow Ripper made this comment in a Summer of Peace interview last year.
The recent tragedies in the Ukraine, Israel/Palestine and Syria point to the overwhelming challenges which can be so disheartening. Our prayers go to the people who are directly suffering. The word is so interconnected, when one person suffers, we all suffer.
Such tragic events deepen our commitment to support viable and practical peacebuilding efforts from the inner to the international levels and to encourage all Shift Network community members to take meaningful actions for peace in your daily lives.
With tragic news like we've had, it is easy to forget there is a new wave of peacebuilding that is gaining momentum. In the Summer of Peace we are witnessing and participating in the rapid growth of grassroots peacebuilding efforts around the world.
The Summer of Peace summit interviews have been truly inspiring — with pathfinders and social healing catalysts speaking from their hearts about practical ways to promote peace. People in 125 countries have registered for the summit, making it truly a global event! (Register to listen to over 70+ FREE interviews – click here.)
For example, recently Chief Phil Lane, Jr. spoke about Sixteen Indigenous Principles for Building a Harmonious World. These principles have been and are being applied with great success helping millions of people. (Click on Summer of Peace recordings below and see Movement News for Chief Phil's recommended resources.)
Chief Phil and Indigenous elders from around the world are now calling for Pope Francis to apologize for the Papal Bulls of 1452-1493 that set the legal groundwork for colonization, including the killing, raping and robbing of millions of Indigenous peoples – click here. This is an historic and important effort as atoning for and correcting the mistakes of the past is key to creating a peaceful future.
There is also beautiful momentum building towards the International Day of Peace – September 21. In this edition, we feature an article by Marty Krasney about the Dalai Lama Fellows participating in the Compassion Games, which culminates on the International Day of Peace. We also have an article by our friends Bill McCarthy and Laurien Towers about the International Day of Peace Global Broadcast. You are warmly welcomed to participate in the Compassion Games, the Global Broadcast and other International Day of Peace activities. (See Movement News)
We also have an article and video from Jay Ponti and PeaceLink Live about the 10XSummit in Los Angeles, where our very own Philip Hellmich, Director of Peace, will join a star-studded line up of peace pioneers. (Shift Network members receive a 40 % discount when registering by August 18. To register click here and use this coupon code: Shift Network).
Nina Meyerhof, founder of Children of the Earth, provided a beautiful article about what is peace. Guy Finley, who was recently featured in the Summer of Peace, wrote an outstanding article exploring how we can awaken to our true leadership potential. Do listen to the profound Summer of Peace interview with Guy as well (Click on Summer of Peace recordings below).
We are also thrilled to feature profiles submitted by Shift Network community members Rev. Dorothy Wellington and Annette Schafer.
I invite you to submit an article for The Catalyst about your commitment to peace and how that is taking shape. Please send your 400-800 word article to us by July 27 — editor@theshiftnetwork.com, along with a photo and brief bio.
Finally, three of our Summer of Peace partners are creating exciting live conferences happening in October and November 2014 that will carry the collective momentum forward. The Shift Network is delighted to be co-sponsors of these incredible events and encourage you to attend one or all of them:
- The Economics of Sustainability – Emerging Models for a Healthy Planet – October 6–9, 2014 – Fort Mason, San Francisco, CA; produced by the Praxis Peace

Today in Atlanta, because of a Spelman College senior's compassionate and innovative work as a Dalai Lama Fellow, teen moms are acquiring life skills and completing high school.
At a factory established by the first two Dalai Lama Fellows from Egypt, previously unemployable women in Cairo earn their living in textile manufacturing and recognized their rights as workers and citizens . . . [read more]
The 2014 Peace Day Global Broadcast – September 20 and 21
By Bill McCarthy with Laurien Towers
One spring morning in 2009 I had an inspiring idea: What if for one day there was a media focus exclusively on promoting peace? The UN International Day of Peace on September 21 would be the most appropriate day, and the Internet would be the perfect vehicle. Excited by the prospect I called my producing partner Laurien Towers. She thought it was a great idea and committed to do everything she could to make it happen . . . [read more]

Peace, Peace, Peace ... now and forever.
By Dr. Nina Meyerhof, featured in the Summer of Peace
Peace is something we all want. We know it is more than the absence of war. We know it is a state of Being as well. We learn the words and seek the experience of inner peace for the road to world peace. Yet, what is this nebulous peace? With so many wars, confrontations, challenges and competitions, how do we ever even learn to live this word peace? . . . [read more]
Through the Gates of Greatness: Liberation From Limitation
By Guy Finley, featured in the Summer of Peace
To begin with, and to set the stage for our study, it is the true leaders — those individuals of this world who expand its boundaries - who reveal the secret routes to new and nobler realities. Such revolutionary discoveries are never the work of organizations — groups that always spring up in the wake of the walk of those who lead in order to capitalize upon their work. Those who seek power by such means are, by definition, little more than followers of the individuals who have found the power to discover. And generally speaking, such followers tend to be fearful because their powers are always borrowed. So then, what is it that makes one person a true leader and another his dependent? The answer is not what you think! . . . [read more]

My Commitment to Peace: And Yet They Rise
By Rev. Dorothy Wellington
Thank you for the opportunity to submit an article on our commitment to Peace.
I am an ordained minister and a 1995 graduate of Grand Canyon University. I have been involved in reaching out to hurting people and inspirational teaching since 1980. I have spent 15 years as a therapist for those suffering from depression, anxiety, grief and loss, personal development and troubled couple relationships. Over the years I have conducted numerous workshops, seminars and special speaking engagements. I am the author of eight small and powerful books that help people to be healed from life's painful events and to teach people how to be in-spirit with God and live in our physical Universe. I have been the founding pastor of a church in west Phoenix in the early 90's for five years and today I'm the inspirational teacher, pastor and director for a poor and homeless community outreach meeting in parks in central Phoenix . . . My Commitment to Peace
By Annette Schafer, M.A.
I have recently completed a book: Transformational Leadership: Bringing Soul Into Organizations. My book takes a profound look at the state of our organizations, our lives, and life on this planet. It addresses the urgent need to transform our Western industrial world-view into a more holistic, life-affirming model before we come any closer to the abyss that we seem to be rapidly approaching. This book presents a synthesis of ancient wisdom, new scientific discoveries, consciousness theories, the mind/body connection, Jungian psychology, and modern management theory and practice in an amalgam that challenges our most deeply held cultural beliefs, while offering a unique perspective that will revitalize our lives, our organizations, and our world. The following is a synopsis of this transformational process: a step toward peace and global renewal . . . [read more]

Acharya Mangalanda
By Philip M. Hellmich
Acharya Mangalanda is an American disciple of Sri Anandamayi Ma and has been deeply associated with India and its culture for more than 40 years. When I met Mangalanda at a recent gathering of the Global Peace Initiative of Women, I fell in love with his deep devotional kirtan. His chant "Jaya Jaya Ma" is saturated with Anandamayi Ma's presence, awakening a profound sense of joy, peace and love in the heart. I have listened to Mangalanda's CDs repeatedly. To learn more about Mangalanda and to listen to his music – click here (click on "Kirtan").
