 China
and the Shift

Welcome to a special issue of the
Catalyst, focused on China! Two weeks ago, I
was blessed to speak at the
2nd Annual World Cultural Forum, which the Chinese
created as a counterpoint to
the World Economic Forum in Davos.
They rolled out the red carpet for political,
business, academic and cultural leaders ranging from
the prime minister of
Greece (remarkably soulful) to a Princess of
Netherlands (a real eco-pioneer)
to some of our Western allies like Ervin Laszlo, Jean
Houston and Barbara Marx
Hubbard and many mayors from both China and the West.
The Chinese leaders were
impressive in their commitment to creating an
ecological civilization (the
conference theme), surprisingly candid about China's
challenges, and eager to
build bridges.
As I had thought about my speech in advance,
I realized just how central a role China can (or
perhaps even must) play in our
shift to a peaceful, sustainable, healthy, and
prosperous world. With 1.3
billion people and what will soon be the largest
economy in the world, their
choices will put us on the evolutionary path. Or not.
So I focused my talk on how China can lead
the way in the Shift, drawing from their deep
history, cultural strengths and
unique opportunities. I share the Powerpoint and the
longer text version
below. I also invited several others who presented
at the WCF to share their
papers below, in addition to a great piece on Qi Gong
from our ally Mingtong
Gu.
