By Stephen Dinan, founder and CEO of The Shift Network
Yoga is practiced by people around the world and is helping catalyze a global shift in consciousness. Yoga is one of our most ancient spiritual practices (estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 years old), which is part of why the United Nations has designated June 21 is the UN International Day of Yoga.
The spread of yoga around the world truly gives me hope that there is a global shift in consciousness taking place — one person, one breath, one posture and one meditation at a time.
To celebrate and accelerate yoga’s impact in the world, we have teamed up with UPLIFT, in association with Parmarth Niketan in Rishikesh, India, to create the annual Yoga Day Summit — a free online event on June 21. This is our second year and we are offering over 12 hours of free videos featuring some of India’s saints, world-renown yoga teachers, kirtan performers, scientists, and much more! (To pre-register free for the Yoga Day Summit, click here.)
The Yoga Day Summit will include Swami Chidananda Saraswati, Sri Mooji, Seane Corne, Shiva Rea, Deepak Chopra, Janet Stone,Tommy Rosen, Kia Miller, Anand Mehrotra, and Richard Miller, plus free yoga classes. One of my mentors, Michael Singer has produced profound videos about yoga and karma yoga based on his New York Times bestselling books The Untethered Soul and The Surrender Experiment.
On Yoga Day, you can join a global sunset yoga wave unifying the world through our friends at UNIFY – click here.
Another wisdom tradition that inspires me is the Enneagram — a roadmap, or soul map, for understanding who you are and finding compassion for others. Enneagram is a time-tested system that integrates your whole being and can be applied to every area of your life.
We are launching our next annual Enneagram Global Summit on June 7–10 featuring Helen Palmer, Russ Hudson, Cheryl Richardson, Kathlyn Hendricks and many more! We want to thank Jessica Dibbs for her leadership in hosting and producing this amazing offering! (To register free, click here.)
In this edition of The Catalyst, we have inspiring articles about yoga by Philip M. Hellmich, our Director of Peace and co-producer of the Yoga Day Summit, and Kelle Walsh. We also have articles about Enneagram from Lee Doyle and Susan Olesek — Susan provides a heartfelt update on the Enneagram Prison Project.
I also want to bring special attention to the article by Mark Gerzon, The Day After We Vote, and his new book, The Reunited States of America. Mark is a leading voice in a transpartisan movement striving to transform the political dynamics in the United States.
Conscious political engagement is dear to my heart and I will be launching an extensive speaking campaign for my new book Sacred America, Sacred World to be released on July 5. I have timed the book and an upcoming American Citizens Summit to take place leading up to the US elections. (See Movement News for more about Sacred America, Sacred World.)

While the masses flock to yoga studios to perfect their poses, some Western yoga practitioners have been embracing karma yoga — one of the 5 branches of yoga often defined as “selfless service,” or the yoga of work.
I had to obtain extra security clearance to first bring them in, but now regularly, on week five of the eight-week program we teach in jail, we purposely drop two, 100-piece puzzles, a pair of kittens made “for under five years old,” onto the floor and direct 45 supposed “hardened criminals” to divide into two groups to assemble. Personality comes online like giving a ball to boys at recess.
On November 9, when we wake up from our long slumber of the 2016 election, we will once again face the reality behind this crazy election year drama. Like a family returning to their termite-infested home, we will recognize that our nation is worse shape than when we left. After the “victors” on Election Day have finished their fleeting celebration, we will face the consequences of another toxic dose of hyperpartisan poison, which will leave the body politic weaker than ever.
After 36 hours in transition, I came home from India to find that the people who had rented my apartment while I was gone had completely disorganized all of my carefully arranged closets and shelves. Sitting among the chaos of unpacked and unwashed things, and the disorderly nature of my thoughts I know that soon all will be restored. But do I want really it to be? It would be a shame to put everything back the way it was. I don’t travel in order to come back the same as when I left. And India, in her wild bedlam and cacophonous colors had rearranged me down to my soul.
"Although we come from opposite ends of the political spectrum, we believe our country needs to come together. The Reunited States of America: How We Can Cross the Partisan Divide will help us do that. It reconnects us to our country's motto — "out of many, one" — and helps us meet the challenge of reuniting the country that we both love." Enneagram Prison Project — The Shift Network is delighted to support the Enneagram Prison Project — a non-profit dedicated to serving the incarcerated. Founder Susan Olesek says, "In bearing witness to the courageous inner-work taking place in the unlikely place that is prison, I became downright convinced that the benefit of self-understanding through the lens of the Enneagram is a critical missing piece for real criminal reform."
