Jifunza C. Wright M.D., M.P.H.

Owner and founder of the Healthy Food Hub, Black Oaks Center

Dr. Jifunza Wright is a holistic family physician who prescribes herbs and food as medicine. The award winning community health project, the Healthy Food Hub is celebrating 10 years of being in the trenches of the Chicagoland area creating microclimates of health and well being in neighborhoods with the greatest need. On the south and west sides of Chicago, now in Southern Cook in partnership with Cook County Health (CCH) folk who live in food insecure, impoverished, low food access areas can get fruits, vegetables, dry goods and yes herbs and teas for taste and medicine. With Dr. Wright's oversight, Cook County physicians are prescribing Rx Bags for cardiovascular disease, diabetes as well as other ills. Patients are bringing their prescriptions to the Fresh Food Markets offered by the Healthy Food Hub at 3 locations in Robbins, Ford Heights and Oak Forest.

The overarching vision is for local foods and medicines to be grown to become commodity, value added items to generate endogenous economic development in food desert communities.
