Paying for a cup of tea when I was short of money that week. I was at the counter and went to pay, found I didn't have enough, and this lady came up and paid for the tea when I told the fellow behind the counter to not bother making the tea, as I didn't have enough on me. I thought that was wonderful, I nearly cried.

In the 76 years I've been alive it would be impossible to nail down just one thing, but my mentor and teacher would have to be the one that qualifies. I had not seen my friend in 35 years. We spoke, we sent messages, but she was 6,000 miles away. She and her family paid for my trip to see her; it was the first holiday I had had in 27 years. And to top that, friends of hers were so moved about our story they bought tickets for us to go to Hawaii together! I got five weeks with my friend and it was like we had never parted, just picked up where we left off! I got to see Oregon, California, Hawaii, and Washington state, eagles flying, mountains, the biggest tree I had ever seen, i will never forget the moment I saw all of this beauty with my own eyes, but the one thing I will treasure all of my life was the moment I saw Julie waiting for me in the airport — that hug was amazing!

As a 22-year-old single mother, I lived on my own. All my family had moved four hours away from home, my close friends had moved out of state. I was working about 25-30 hours a week and taking five college courses. The local YMCA (one woman specifically) made it possible for me to have daycare for my son. I worked, took classes, and commuted only during daycare hours.

My kidney recipient, who I did not know previously, was in my state for surgery that he never recovered from. His two children who I had never met invited me to come and say goodbye to him before he was taken off of life support. They cannot possibly understand how immensely important that was for my soul, to be allowed into their most painful time, invited to be with them and say my own goodbyes to a soul I am still intricately connected to somehow in a way that I cannot describe.

Never lose a chance of saying a kind word. As Collingwood never saw a vacant place in his estate but he took an acorn out of his pocket and popped it in, so deal with your compliments through life. An acorn costs nothing; but it may sprout into a prodigious bit of timber.

In the 1990s when I went to the U.S. to do a master's, I rented a room close to campus at an old lady's home. After a few months she told me that I brought so much joy to her life just by being there and sharing my ethnic food with her, so she decided that I will not pay the rent for the rest of the time left. I became close to her kids and daughter-in-law. I graduated, left the U.S., and seven years later came back for a PhD to another state. During my first week, the daughter-in-law and her mom drove eight hours to welcome me and help me get settled. They paid for all my bedroom furniture, a desk, and a chair, and paid a deposit for my computer. I really cried because my whole life I am a giver and very rarely receive.

The world needs all of our power and love and energy, and each of us has something to give. The trick is to find it and use it, to find it and give it away, so there will always be more. We can be lights for each other,  and through each other's illumination we will see the way. Each of us is a seed, a silent promise, and it is always spring.
