Celebrate Golden Rule Day on April 5

In 2007, URI-Africa and Interfaith Peace-building Initiative (IPI) declared April 5 “Golden Rule Day” and called upon the citizens of the world to join in celebrating the day and living everyday to make this world a better and more peaceful for all. Now, 11 years later, organizations around the world are teaming up to remind us all that the Golden Rule still matters! Of the hundreds of versions of the Golden Rule, this one was chosen:

Treat others and the Planet as you would like to be treated.

On Thursday, April 5, the world is invited to participate in a 24-hour global webcast devoted to the Golden Rule. All programming will be streamed through Facebook Live and our website. The programming, live and pre-recorded, will focus on peace, compassion, kindness, caring for our Earth, and the power of the Golden Rule to change each of us, and the world. Everything will start at 10:00pm Pacific on April 4 — which is the evening of April 5 in Japan and Australia — and end at 10:00pm Pacific on April 5.

The webcast will move around the world, starting in Japan and stopping in no less than eight time zones! A few of the international offerings include starting out with World Peace Prayers offered by the Goi Peace Foundation (Japan), an interview with Australia mega-star Lior and the playing of the Compassion Symphony, a discussion on kindness led by Indian pop singer Nimo Patel, students from Pakistan and India sharing thoughts on kindness, stories of interfaith collaboration from South Africa, an interview on the importance of the Golden Rule to care for the Earth from the UK, an 8,000-year-old Hindu song sung by a Catholic Choir in NYC, and MUCH MORE!

Back in October, staff from the three Planning Partners — the Charter for Compassion, United Religions Initiative, and Golden Rule Project — started meeting to create a short program to highlight the universal principle of the Golden Rule and to remind us to live and practice it throughout the year. Soon, they realized that they needed 24 hours to include the many offerings that came pouring in. They have gathered interviews, discussions, songs, and dances to help celebrate the Golden Rule and call us to action in ways both large and small.

We are grateful to the global members of the Charter for Compassion that have offered terrific programs for Golden Rule Day 2018! We are thrilled to be part of this effort to highlight the importance of the Golden Rule, and we hope that millions of people will join us on April 5.
Marilyn Turkovich, Executive Director of the Charter for Compassion

Last year, on April 5, we sent to our network a short reminder to live the Golden Rule. However, this year, it’s a Golden Rule party! With the help of many partners, we have assembled amazing stories, interviews, music, and more to shine a global spot light on the Golden Rule.
Felipe Zurita, Program Coordinator of Golden Rule Project

United Religions Initiative is honored and excited to be a partner in this Golden Rule Day celebration! The Golden Rule is the foundation that underpins the work of URI’s nearly 1,000 Cooperation Circle member organizations in 104 countries. They are applying the Golden Rule every day as we work together to build a more compassionate and just world — with and for people of all religions, spiritual expressions, and Indigenous traditions. This 24-hour long webcast on April 5 — Golden Rule Day — gives us all a day to reflect on and highlight some of the amazing things people are doing to live and spread the Golden Rule all around the world.
Sari Heidenreich, North America Regional Coordinator for the United Religions Initiative (URI)
