The Shift Catalyst — Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

From Philip Hellmich

I just returned from speaking at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas at the “Activating a Global Shift: 12th Annual Yoga for Peace Symposium.” Other speakers included Matthew Fox, Alastair McIntosh, Pat McCabe (Woman Stands Shining), and Swami Brahmananda.

It was inspiring to learn how Swami Sivananda sent Swami Vishnudevananda to the West in 1957 to help spread yoga and Vedanta. The Sivananda centers have since trained over 46,000 yoga teachers, emphasizing a deep commitment to peace by integrating the ancient wisdom of yoga and Vedanta into a modern context.

It was clear from all the speakers at the peace symposium that the global challenges we face, including climate change, are in essence a spiritual crisis — that we need to awaken to our oneness with all of life and to take action guided by spiritual wisdom. Collectively, we need to reexamine the belief that the “pursuit of happiness” is best achieved through massive consumerism. Ultimately, we must create ways of living that are in harmony with natural laws.

The annual United Nations International Day of Yoga on June 21 is a testament to how yoga is spreading around the world, transforming lives one breath, one posture at a time.

In celebration of Yoga Day, we are launching the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit (June 21–24), a free online summit featuring over 50 world-renowned yoga teachers, swamis, swaminis, and speakers, including Kia Miller, Jai Dev Singh, Gloria Latham, Seane Corn, and Congressman Tim Ryan.

A big thanks to Cyndi Lee, the founder of OM yoga Center, and an author and lay Buddhist chaplain, for joining me as the co-host of the summit this year! (To register for free, click here.)

On Yoga Day, June 21, we’ll be broadcasting our “best of India” videos from the previous four Yoga Day Summits. These amazing interviews were filmed in Rishikesh, India, on the banks of the holy Ganges River in the Himalayas, an area considered to be the birthplace of yoga. The videos feature H.H. Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswati, H.H. Pujya Shankaracharya Swami Divyanand Teerthji, Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji, Tommy Rosen, Bruce Lipton, and many more!

And then from June 22–24, we’ll be featuring interviews with speakers who will take you deeper into how yoga facilitates healing and awakening. Click here to register for free so you can enjoy the opportunity to experience and celebrate the beauty, power, and depth of yoga as a vehicle for living a divine life and creating a world built on Oneness.

Whether you’re new to yoga or you’re a seasoned practitioner — you’ll discover new practices, guided meditations, and healing breathwork for restoring, balancing, and invigorating your body, mind, and soul.

On another note, given the current tensions between the United States and Iran, I wanted to share an article I wrote based on a Shift bridge-building trip to Iran back in 2016. I hope you find it insightful.

Please be sure to check out our new section, “The Nicest Thing,” a special video series in which we ask prominent authors, teachers, thought leaders, and others to answer the question, “What is the nicest thing a non-family member has ever done for you?” Their intimate and uplifting stories offer glimpses into the personal lives of people you already know and admire. We’ll also be including stories from Shift team members to give you the opportunity to get to know us all a little better!

We’re launching this section in this issue with wonderful stories from Anita Moorjani, author of the New York Times bestseller, Dying to Be Me, and three featured speakers in our upcoming Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit — Shift faculty members Raja Choudhury and K.P. Khalsa, and Conscious Living co-host Bianca Alexander.

Finally, we’d love to hear your answer to the question, Which book, video, or teacher has been the most influential in your practice of yoga? To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.

Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.

A Personal Video Invitation to the Jue 21–24 Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit From Your Hosts, Philip Hellmich & Cyndi Lee

Philip: Hello, everyone. I'm Philip Hellmich, Director of Peace for The Shift Network, and I'm delighted to be the co-host of the Yoga of Healing & Awakening Summit, looking at the essential depth teachings and daily practices for your mind, body, and soul. The summit is from June 21 to 24. It's presented by The Shift Network in association with Parmarth Niketan and Yoga International. And I'm here with my co-host, Cyndi Lee. Cyndi?

Cyndi: Hi, Philip. Gosh, it was such an incredible honor and treat to get to be the co-host of this summit. Between us, we talked to I think over 50 amazing world-renowned yogis and swamis and sages and beloved teachers and musicians and scientists. All kinds of inspiring people who are really living yoga, they're sharing yoga, they're breathing yoga. And they shared with us their practices and their insights and their teachings. It was really great.

The Inner Peacekeeping Program: Giving Humanitarians and Refugees the Tools of Inner Peace
By Amandine Roche, a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

Teaching yoga and meditation in Afghanistan gave me so much joy. As I was practicing yoga asanas with women in shelters, I understood that after 25 years of war, they were completely disconnected — mind from body —and, just by doing some flexibility exercises, I could see on their faces that they felt alive again. When you suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), you are kind of 75 percent dead; these techniques help bring you back to the present moment.

Anita Moorjani's Story
Author of the New York Times bestseller, Dying to Be Me

EXCERPT: Whenever I would try and figure out how to make it up to him for everything he was doing, he didn't want anything. It was like he was so satiated in his life. His payback was doing this and he would just say to me, "No, don't feel you owe me. Don't feel you have to pay me back. One day there'll be somebody who inspires you and you will want to do this for them, and just do that, and in other words, pay it forward." That is something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life because he changed my life. The first thing that changed my life was the cancer and dying and coming back, and then this was the second big awakening, big change in my life.

Anita will be presenting a free hour-long video event on Wednesday, June 12:
Discover the Transformative Power of Near-Death Experiences (Even If You Haven’t Had One). For more details — and to register for this free event — click here.

K.P. Khalsa's Story
Ayurvedic Herbalist and Teacher, and a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

EXCERPT: We met when I was a teenager, and just had instant rapport, and he asked me if I would like to study with him individually. At the time I was a college student, kind of lost and drifting. I didn't even know what major to select in college, and plus, as many of you have heard, I had a life-threatening disease that was diagnosed when I was 10 years old, when I was told that I would be dead by 40. Well, when you're 10 years old, it's very hard to process that sort of thing, so I didn't really know what to make of that.

To watch the video and read the transcript of K.P.’s heartfelt 8-minute story, click here.

Bianca Alexander's Story
Executive Producer and Host of Conscious Living, and a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

EXCERPT: Well, the nicest thing a non-family member has ever done for me, was a friend of mine who I worked with back when I was working as an attorney here in Hollywood at Paramount, and she was at Fox. She and I used to party together, drink, and smoke, and straight West coast total partying — non-spiritual, non-yoga, any of that. One day, she said, "Well, why don't we, on a Sunday morning, meet me for church?" I was like, "Okay. What kind of church?" She's like, "Well, it's kind of a different church. It's meditation, and there's a reading, and just come. Just come. You'll see, you'll like it."

To watch the video and read the transcript of Bianca’s inspiring 6-minute story, click here.

Raja Choudhury's Story
Spiritual Teacher, and a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

EXCERPT: I moved into this attic and I was living upstairs with her five cats and me up there. His wife was equally eccentric. I started living there and he became this kind of friend of mine. I was paying literally no rent. The agreement was that I would help him out. I didn't know what that would require, but he started... we started having dinners every evening and we'd light candles and drink wine and it was a very civilized two years of my life. He introduced me to philosophy.

Raja's 7-month live video training, Awakening Your Kundalini Advanced Program: An Initiation Into Raising Your Vibration & Bridging Heaven and Earth, begins on Thursday, June 6. For more details — and to register — click here.

Understanding the True Purpose of Yoga
By Bianca Alexander, a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

These days, it seems like everyone is a “yogi.” Whether on social media, big pharma-sponsored TV commercials, or countless Bikram, hot, and core power studios in every major city across the globe, yoga has quickly become embedded in our mainstream culture. Thank goodness! It means we’re headed in the right direction as a civilization, evolving away from gross materiality and towards a more mindful, compassionate and spiritual society. However, yoga is about a lot more than physical prowess, preternatural flexibility, or believe it or not — having the perfect yoga booty.

Interview with Nubia Teixeira, author of Yoga and the Art of Mudras
By Carrie Beth McCall, student of Nubia Teixeira, a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

I want my teachings to empower the practitioner to feel, through the vehicle of their body and the creation of specific shapes, that they can create a bridge between the physical and the mystical, a link between the natural and the supernatural. I wanted to be effective in teaching how to bring the beauty of Bhakti to the yogasanas as a way of offering oneself to the Divine.

Why Silence Matters
Video blog by Gloria Latham, a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

Doing yoga is one of the only times during your day that you’re disconnected from your phone. Pretty crazy right? You’re dialled in and connected all the time! So, you’re super connected in one way and completely disconnected in another. You can be chatting to people all over the globe which is amazing but unless you’re careful, you can become completely disconnected from yourself. What happens is instead of living your life, you end up reacting to the needs and demands of others without any hope of taking time for your real goals.

In this short video, you’ll learn:

  • How to be there for others without sacrificing your true self
  • How to create stillness and activate your intuition to guide you to your purpose
  • Exactly what you need to do to access your potential

Build Bridges of Goodwill and Respect with Iran: 8 Surprises from the Iranian People
By Philip M. Hellmich, Director of Peace for The Shift Network

I am deeply saddened by the growing tensions between the United States and Iran. The U.S. and Iran will be much safer in the long term by building bridges of goodwill and respect for one another instead of building walls of fear and mistrust.

In October 2016, I made a 14-day trip to Iran that profoundly opened me to a new understanding about one of the oldest civilizations in the world and its people, who received our group with open hearts.

Many would like to experience a peaceful life, unconditional love, and joy. It's easy to practice peacefulness when we are on vacation or in a natural environment. The challenges occur when we're surrounded by outside circumstances that seem unjust, unloving, and unfair. This is when our peaceful journey tends to be shaken, and chaos occurs both internally and externally. In order to have a peaceful journey in life, it's important to embrace and accept what is with compassion, especially during the chaos.

Inner Peacekeeping for Global Peacekeepers
TEDx TALK by Amandine Roche, a featured speaker in the Yoga of Healing and Awakening Summit

As a human rights lawyer for the United Nations, Amandine Roche worked for 15 years in conflict zones under challenging circumstances. She realized that many of the humanitarians were suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and had inadequate resources to deal with it. In this TEDx talk, which begins with a chilling encounter with a suspected suicide bomber, she makes the case for how ancient wisdom traditions such as yoga and meditation can help humanitarians on the front lines to avoid burnout, stress, and depression. She has worked in more than 20 electoral processes in post-conflict countries, mainly in Afghanistan for the last decade, with a focus on civic education, democratization, gender and youth empowerment. Snatam Kaur

A 2019 Grammy nominee and performer, Snatam Kaur is an American singer-songwriter who performs kirtan and Indian devotional music. Through inspirational concerts, workshops, immersion courses, and retreats, this much-beloved devotional singer and recording artist shares the power of Sikh sacred mantras with all the world. Possessed of an incandescently luminous voice and a deep knowledge of Kundalini yoga, her concerts and events are joyous occasions and a source of solace for our troubled times.

“A big focus in all I’m doing now is simply coming back to ‘I am love’ and feeling that vibration of love,” she says. “There’s such a feeling of divisiveness in the world now — division amongst each other, and division within ourselves in the form of either shame, guilt, fear, or anger. Mantra is powerful in awakening us back to what it means to be loving to ourselves, and loving toward our neighbors who may not agree with us. It’s really from that place of love that we can find the language to work together — to be together.”
