1) We do not incarnate into this life as a “blank slate,” as expressed in the idea that individuals are born without mental content and therefore all knowledge comes from one’s life experience or perception.

The Shamanic Astrology Paradigm holds that attitudes, habits, addictions, and expectations exist prior to encounters with our parents or the culture or historical time period we are growing up in. In other words, there is a (personal) nature before we experience nurture.

The Dreaming Bones

In 1991 a dream visited me in the night about a mummy adorned in gold. In the dream I find myself sitting with three men and a woman at a table in an English pub at Heathrow Airport in London. I’m waiting to connect with an international flight to the United States. One of the men asks me if I will deliver the package under the table to the U.S. Looking under the table, I am surprised to see a wooden box — five feet long, 18 inches wide, a foot in height. While pondering the size and what possibly it contains, I remark, “The box is quite large. I need to see what is inside.” I have no intention of honoring the request.

In 1994, fifteen people, including my wife, Linda, and I, gathered at a West Hollywood apartment to listen to a Toltec shaman from Mexico with long brown hair who spoke in a very gentle voice. Having studied briefly with Carlos Castaneda in the nineties — whom I loved as an author, but not as a teacher because his path was so fear-driven — I was ready for a second opinion about Mesoamerican shamans.

As I listened with the others, he spoke about waking up from “the dream of the planet,” the “art of stalking,” the “angel of death,” and much more.

PRISM: A Racial Equity Learning Laboratory

The next session of Prism, Neighborhood Connections’ racial equity learning lab, begins in July. Prism is led by two of Cleveland’s most experienced and dynamic racial equity trainers: Erica Merritt and Adele DiMarco Kious. Prism participants explore the historic conflict that continues to shape the United States and determine the fate of all its people.

Racism is examined on four levels: internalized, interpersonal, institutional, and structural. Tools to assess the state of one’s organization and community are introduced. Participants also have the opportunity to participate in caucus groups and bridge the chasm between community and institution throughout their Prism journey. Leaders leave the program with greater self awareness, an individualized plan for beginning to dismantle racism in their neighborhood or organization and greater capacity to do so.
