The Shift Network Catalyst

2022 Catalyst, Issue 1 – Ancestral Healing Summit

Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.

From Rev. Dr. Aliah MaJon:

I grew up during the early Civil Rights Movement, so I've known about Martin Luther King, Jr. my whole life. In fact, he was so important to our family that I even considered him an “ancestor” — socially speaking. My mother is from Alabama, so the racial justice activities he led in her home state were routinely the topic of conversations.

Of course, I also knew that Dr. King was a Christian minister, and often delivered actual church sermons along with the historic speeches he came to be known for.

Another way of putting this: Rev. King was a true leader and teacher from the time he was in college until he left us when he was assassinated in 1968.

During my research on his life and his historic contributions, I discovered a few resources that contain archives of Dr. King’s sermons and speeches — and one of my favorite sermons is called The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life, which you can listen to here while viewing a slideshow of historical photographs of Dr. King and others. (Read the transcript here.)

I wasn't at all surprised to learn that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. also taught about what I would call “Practical Spirituality” — he delivered illuminating words to congregations long before he stood on a platform to bring forth racial and social justice. I personally feel that you cannot be a leader of his caliber without knowing about, and putting into practice, what I consider to be high level spiritual growth and personal development principles. My own life proved this to me.

Dr. King seems to have been quite a student of those principles early in his life — this sermon is from 1953. It really speaks to me that I can now look at him as a role model in this regard, as well as knowing him to be an icon of civil rights. I agree with the words of his sermon, and I especially love and that he put forth that a “Complete Life” must have the following three parts:

1. Length: Love Yourself
2. Breath: Love Others
3. Height: Love God (or whatever name you call your Higher Power.)

I sincerely hope this helps to deepen your reflections on Dr. King as we celebrate his life and contributions tomorrow.

Sending sweet blessings to our ancestors,

Rev. Dr. Aliah K. MaJon (she/her)

Shift Network Update

By Lisa Bonnice, host of the Ancestral Healing Summit

Hi. I'm Lisa Bonnice, your host for The Shift Network's fourth annual Ancestral Healing Summit, a free online event from January 18–21.

If you, like so many others, are wondering what you can do to help humanity find its way through these strange and transformative times — especially if your skillset doesn’t include inventing new ways to adapt to climate change or running for political office — this is something you can do to help.

Our current world’s condition is the culmination of centuries of built-up, unhealed traumas — and our ancestors are beseeching us to help right their wrongs… before it’s too late.

Many of us are finding that this powerful and important work is exactly what we’re here to do. We are, as Heather Dane calls us, Generational Pattern Shifters. We feel an urge… we hear a calling… to work with our ancestors to heal not just our own dysfunctional family patterns, but global damage done to and by generations past in the forms of plagues, diasporas, holocausts, slavery, colonization, wars, and other extreme traumas that are still causing ripple effects today.

This year’s summit includes powerful conversations with luminaries like Thomas Hübl, Sandra Ingerman, Christina Pratt, and Jill Purce. We discuss the big picture and our places in it, and what our contributions to global healing can be.

Even more conversations include practical tools we can use to communicate with our ancestors to ask for their help and work with them, hand in hand.

Shelley Kaehr talks about generational regression, which is similar to past-life work, except that we can be regressed into ancestral storylines. Masami Covey shares how our bodies demonstrate ancestral traumas, and how to interpret the stories they’re trying to tell us. Kelly Sullivan Walden offers an excellent method of tapping into ancestral messages via our dreams.

Carrie Paris offers a practice using phases of the moon to release ancestral family patterns, and Nancy Hendrickson talks about how we can use the Tarot to divine messages directly from Spirit, and our kin, to help us along our path. Fern Vuchinich and Christina Caudill both offer information about how astrology can help us dig into our stories and untangle snarled webs.

Dr. Velma Love offers a beautiful and empowering reframing of the experience of enslaved peoples. Liza Miron discusses the repercussions we are all feeling due to generations of our grandmothers experiencing painful loss of pregnancies and difficult childbirths, and Langston Kahn offers a perspective on healing the “father wound.”

Ancestral Healing is breathtaking in its scope — once you’ve experienced the power of this work, you’ll never look at life the same way. You can see for yourself when you register for the event and check out the power-packed lineup of speakers for this year’s Summit. I promise, you’ll be glad that you did.

Register for free here for the Ancestral Healing Summit. I’ll see you there!

The uplifting stories in this issue’s “The Nicest Thing” section come from Akashic records authority and summit speaker Linda Howe, and dream analyst, summit speaker, and new Shift faculty Kelly Sullivan Walden.

A Personal Invitation to the Ancestral Healing Summit (January 18-21) From Your Host, Lisa Bonnice

I’m Lisa Bonnice and I’m honored to once again host The Shift Network’s Ancestral Healing Summit — for the fourth year — where we gather in conversation about how events that shaped the lives of our ancestors are still reverberating today and driving our behavior... most of the time without our awareness.

Every summit, although focusing on the same subject overall, has its own personality. They take on a life of their own once we begin the production process, and I never know what to expect each year. And this year takes on a new depth as we go beyond the ins and outs of how ancestral healing works and into conversations about why it’s so very important that this work be done now, while humankind is going through such a strange and fascinating transformation.

Shift Impact

As part of this year’s Ancestral Healing Summit, The Shift Network is honored to invite you to a special screening of the film Home From School: The Children of Carlisle, the weekend following the Summit, January 22 and 23.

Honoring ancestors is a long-held value of Native American peoples.

As we commit to Ancestral Healing, we acknowledge that not only do many Native traditions offer avenues for attitudes, practices, and relationships…

… but also that recognizing the wounds inflicted on Native Americans for centuries is an important starting point in our collective healing.

In 2017 a delegation of Northern Arapaho tribal members traveled from Wyoming to Pennsylvania to retrieve remains of three children who died at Carlisle Indian Industrial School in the 1880s.

It’s a journey into the troubled history of Native American boarding schools and a quest to heal generational wounds.

Register for the summit to watch it at your convenience on January 22-23. The film can be accessed via Associate Producer Jordan Dresser’s session page.

The format of 1) establish common values, 2) discuss the truths of history, 3) visibility — demonstrate the present experience of Native people in their modern experience without being romanticized, and 4) present a call to action follows the guidance of First Nations’s Changing the Narrative About Native Americans: A Guide for Allies (PDF). Reclaiming Native Truth’s goal is to move hearts and minds toward greater respect, inclusion, and social justice for Native Americans.

First Nations serves more than 400 Native American tribal organizations, improving economic conditions through direct financial grants, technical assistance and training, and advocacy and policy. The Nicest Thing

In this special video series, prominent authors, thought leaders, and others answer the question, “What is the nicest thing a non-family member has ever done for you?”

Kelly Sullivan Walden’s Story
Shift faculty, celebrated dream analyst, and a featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

EXCERPT: And it was during a time of tremendous growth that came from a place of tremendous flailing and hitting such a dark place, such a dark bottom. And it was a time of... I remember saying to somebody, I wanted to just wear a sign across my shirt that said, “Pardon the mess. I'm under construction.” Don't ask me any questions. Don't expect anything of me. I'm under construction. So I was just super-vulnerable, super-like what am I going to do with my life?

Linda Howe’s Story
Akashic studies expert and featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

EXCERPT: It was about two years. I realized I was still on my bicycle and I was furious. And in my fury, I took down all these treasure maps. I tore them up. I had been to the car dealership in my best outfit. And I sat in that car, because I heard that if I could feel like it was mine, it would be mine. I had done all those things. Oh I was mad. I was hurt. I was betrayed. I was just flooded with all these terrible emotions.

Walk With Your Ancestors in 2022
By Grandmother Flordemayo, a featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

We are all on our sacred journey, our sacred path. We all want to know our destiny. We want to understand the relationship between us as humans… and the cosmos… and Mother Earth.

For the Maya, the ancestors are the building blocks of our lives and ancestral worship is customary and celebratory. We honor our ancestors in prayer, ritual, and ceremony. I believe my ancestors are walking with me on my sacred path and my sacred journey. We are taught that all one needs to do is remember our ancestors and call upon them for help whenever it is needed.

Using Tarot in Ancestral Work
By Nancy Hendrickson, a featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

The idea of the souls of the dead returning home on one night of the year has ancient origins and is found in many cultures throughout the world. In October and the first two days of November we celebrate Samhain, Halloween, Day of the Dead, All Soul’s Day, and All Saint’s Day.

However, you don’t have to wait for a specific season or date to work with your ancestors. It’s always the right time to honor those who lived before you, and to ask for their aid in doing healing work for your family line or healing work for yourself.

Heal Your Ancestors to Heal Your Life
By Shelley A. Kaehr, PhD, a featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

For over 20 years, I’ve worked in the fascinating field of past life regression. During my childhood, my family discussed reincarnation at our dinner table one night, and from that moment on, the concept resonated with me at a soul level. Years later, after a friend died in an accident, past life regression helped me successfully heal unresolved grief, and that’s when I knew I wanted to make this my life’s work.

For any regression to be effective, the recipient must go to the earliest event where challenges became an issue, whether that’s within the person’s current life, or something that happened hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

Our Ancestors’ Wisdom Leads to Spiritual Strength & Passion for Living
By Sandra Ingerman, a featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

We join together as a sacred community to welcome in a New Year filled with new choices that we all must make.

Life feels so surreal to many of us right now. Time does not feel like it is following a linear cycle. But we do use certain markers of time to help us ground, giving us a sense that life keeps moving on in the midst of dissolution and also rebirth cycles.

Many people feel relieved when a New Year is welcomed in. Just celebrating that event helps us put some of our past behind and gives us a sense of something new to look forward to. We get inspired to regain a sense of hope, even though many of us have lost so much during these times of such upheaval that will lead to a different way of life that we can’t quite imagine yet.

Can Dreams and Ancestors Help Us Find a Missing Person?
By Kelly Sullivan Walden, a featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

“Why, in God’s name, would you search for a missing person? You’re Doctor Dream, for God’s sake, not the Dream Detective!” My husband, Dana, beseeched, scratching his head.

He was right.

We had enough drama in our combined families as it was, without me spending time I didn’t have looking for a young woman who’d been missing from my neighborhood for nine years, when the only foreseeable outcome would be murder, suicide, abduction. Even in the best-case scenario, the fact that she’s been gone for so long probably meant she didn’t want to be found. But I’m getting ahead of myself…here’s what happened the day before…

Ancestral Healing — Why It Matters… Why Now?
By Natalia O’Sullivan, a featured speaker in the Ancestral Healing Summit

Our society is now in the labour pains of a new age of environmental responsibility, climate change, and the fear and hopelessness of confronting the possibility of annihilation of humankind, as well the gender and race inequalities, all of which is creating a turning point in our human story.

Racial Healing & Justice

Let’s Work Together to Heal Racism… What Would You Like to See?
From Rev. Dr. Aliah MaJon:

It’s a brand-new year, I want to kick it off by hearing from YOU! You’ve been listening to me and now it’s my turn to listen to you. Racial Healing is an enormous endeavor, and If you are reading these words you probably already understand that this work is critically important — and becoming more and more important with each passing day.

However, it is too much of a challenge for just a few of us to have to try to carry out. You may feel that way too. So, let’s embark on this journey together and generate new ideas, support each other, seek out partnerships and, especially, join our hands and our hearts to invite as many people as possible to share their thoughts and convey their visions so that we all can heal.

I’m up for doing this — are you with me?

I’m extending this ask to you in this first column of 2022, by literally inviting you to tell me what you think we ought to do, as well as what you feel could help us to become empowered to do it?

The link below is to a survey that I have prepared so that I can harvest the valuable things that you will say. Don’t worry, I have made it short and easy to complete. I can’t wait to hear from you, and feel free to not be concerned about grammar and spelling. Seed ideas and partial thoughts are welcome, as well as the sharing of the questions you’ve been asking yourself or others. I promise that I will share your gems of wisdom in one of my columns in the near future.

Please complete this survey by January 28, 2022. Thank you all SO very much!

Liberating Race Podcast

Policing Race with Lora King & Chief Mike Alexander

We’re starting a fresh cycle! It is my pleasure to take this time to introduce the new Inclusion Program Manager Kapi’olani Laronal by way of her short introduction to our latest episode of Liberating Race entitled “Policing Race.” Kapi’olani’s significant other has a background in Law Enforcement, so I invited her to review and speak to us regarding this piece. I’m also happy to let you know that you will hear more from her here in the future — she is fast becoming indispensable in the Inclusion Unit, and I truly value her voice and partnership.

Here is what she has to say about this episode (you’'ll find the link to the podcast below):

As seekers of enlightenment, we are often called on to stretch ourselves beyond the comfort of our own perspective in order to arrive at the Truth that is connected to something much greater than “I” in a superficial sense. When we look at our personal truths and start to examine our identity in connection to race, gender, religion, and our experiences with policing and law-and-order, it can become very challenging to rise above the pain. I feel that a critical question in such an examination is to ask: Can we stretch ourselves in the ways that support significant and meaningful change?

In this episode of the Liberating Race podcast, we are invited to look at today’s controversial topic of policing and race in America, and its impact on Black and Brown bodies. We are taken on a journey that allows us to both explore the early history of policing as well as hear about some current encouraging things to consider.

Rev. Dr. Aliah MaJon talks with Lora King and Chief Mike Alexander, as they each share their experiences and challenges, including their optimism about the possibilities for policing in the U.S. today.

Listen to the Podcast!

This podcast is an invitation to all those who are willing to take this journey and be architects of the process of racial healing. Evolution is a stretch, but our convictions matter.
