It’s estimated that over two billion people were aware of the International Day of Peace and there are many peace activities still underway around the world that you can participate in. (See Movement News.)
The International Day of Peace is one of my favorite days of the year. Established by the United Nations in 1981, it’s an opportunity for people around the world to celebrate our shared desire for peace and the many ways that peace is experienced, cultivated, and expressed.
The International Day of Peace is also the culmination of our annual Summer of Peace. We hope you are enjoying the Summer of Peace Letter, a free 13-part series exploring how we can find common ground. The letters are archived so you can share them with your family, friends, schools, and community groups — click here to access the first 12 issues.
Many of us at The Shift Network celebrated the International Day of Peace at the second annual California Vision 2020 — a co-creation of The Shift Network and friends, including Compassionate Capital Region, The California Endowment, United Nations Association Sacramento Chapter, and many more… We had an amazing time as we joined savvy social change agents, wisdom teachers, and political leaders giving voice to hopeful new ideas and bold new strategies to design a future that works for all.
From spiritual leader Michael Beckwith to our filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom to the mayors of Sacramento and Stockton, there was a clear recognition that California can play a particularly important role in leading the Shift on the planet… and in modeling a willingness to work across sectors to do it. We’ll be sharing uplifting and eye-opening videos with you in the months to come that show how we can solve major social challenges from global warming to poverty with a forward-looking, transpartisan approach.
Before you delve into the illuminating articles, videos, and other content below, we’d love to hear your answer to the question, How did you celebrate the International Day of Peace this year? To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.
We hope you enjoy this edition of Catalyst, which is dedicated to the World Peace Weekend, our shared common humanity, and the many ways to experience, express, and share peace!
Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures. — John F. Kennedy

One day when Brett was old enough to really talk, he told me that he recalled me from the spirit house in the sky. Brett’s interview would be the first of many interviews I conducted with children as part of my research and work over the last four decades.
I have always believed that children have innate wisdom. And I believe it’s because of this knowing and the respect I have for them that when meeting and interviewing children, they open up and truly show how creative, intelligent, magical, and wise they are.

In my new book, Rooted in Peace: An Inspiring Story of Finding Peace Within. I ask the reader, what does Peace mean to you? Why is Peace important? Why isn’t Peace celebrated in every classroom, village, town, and city in the U.S. and around the globe? And more importantly, what steps are you taking to create a better world for yourself and the environment?
Inspired by Indigenous views of nature, a movement to grant a form of legal “personhood” to rivers is gaining some ground — a key step, advocates say, in reversing centuries of damage inflicted upon the world’s waterways.
So much of our suffering as human beings comes from the false perception that we are separate –- from nature and from others, including our ancestors…
Our spiritual practice can help us dissolve this illusion, yet sometimes it’s the result of something so deep –– going all the way back to our ancestral roots –– that we can’t seem to clear it. That’s where ancestral medicine can be helpful. This ancient and sacred shamanic practice helps you connect with your deceased ancestors who are well in spirit, to assist them in healing your blood ancestors who are not yet at peace.
In the following 7-minute video, psychotherapist Daniel Foor shares more about the healing possible through the practice of ancestral medicine, and the many benefits it can bring as it opens our hearts to greater understanding, forgiveness, and feelings of belonging.

What if you could make a difference in someone’s life… in every moment of every day? You already are; you just don’t realize it. So says healer and teacher Desda Zuckerman, who was born with the ability to perceive the subtle energy field around every individual.
This subtle energy field, which Desda refers to as your Sacred Anatomy, is far more expansive than your electromagnetic field, which extends four to five feet beyond your body. In contrast, your Sacred Anatomy extends 20 feet beyond your body in every direction. What is your Sacred Anatomy? Simply put, says Desda, “it is the stuff of stars, containing the sum total of your soul's journey.”
Watch the following 6-minute video with Desda as she shares a powerful exercise called “Building the House” that will give you a sensory experience of your own Sacred Anatomy.
As a woman in her 50s or 60s or beyond, you’ve likely been through some rough patches in your life. (Who hasn’t?!) Challenges you may have thought you’d never heal from (but did!)... loss of a loved one or a job, financial struggles, health crises, and other life-altering events.
And doesn’t it just seem sometimes as if life’s difficulties and losses (big and small) happen all at once?! Sometimes we just have to let go of the old in order to make room for new ways of being — that embolden and empower us to step into who we truly are.
In this 6-minute video, leading women’s empowerment teacher Sabrina Chaw shares the story of her Phoenix rising and illuminates the threshold of the “Phoenix Gateway,” the last of 5 “Initiatory” gateways for women.

In The Power of Eight, Lynne McTaggart reveals her remarkable findings from 10 years of experimenting with small and large groups about how the power of group intention can heal our lives and change the world for the better. When individuals in a group focus their intention together on a single target, a powerful collective dynamic emerges that can heal longstanding conditions, mend fractured relationships, lower violence, and even rekindle life purpose. But the greatest untold truth of all is that group intention has a mirror effect, not only affecting the recipient but also reflecting back on the senders.
Drawing on hundreds of case studies, the latest brain research, and dozens of McTaggart’s own university studies, The Power of Eight provides solid evidence showing that there is such a thing as a collective consciousness. Now you can learn to use it and unleash the power you hold inside of you to heal your own life.

For several years, The Shift Network has hosted Indigenous leaders from around the world and invited them to share their sacred knowledge, rituals, and practices to guide us in a way of living that is sustainable, healthy, and just. We’re thus delighted that the Global Indigenous Wisdom Library makes this “virtual council” of leaders and their wisdom available for everyone, everywhere for free. The Global Indigenous Wisdom Library is a collection of audio and video interviews featuring Indigenous leaders from around the world sharing prayers, sacred songs, prophecies, spiritual teachings, and pathways to healing, as well as concrete examples for birthing a new era — one in which all members of the human family are treated with respect, understanding, compassion, and justice. This sacred wisdom is important medicine for us all.
The production of The Global Indigenous Wisdom Library is a gift from The Shift Network, designed to inspire, inform, and involve you by highlighting the voices and important messages of Indigenous leaders from around the world. We want to give a heartfelt thanks to Hereditary Chief Phil Lane Jr. (“Brother Phil”) for his partnership in helping create this Indigenous Wisdom collection. If music creates a space where my heart is touched and where my thoughts disappear, I get a taste of devotion. I do not have a religious background yet I feel devotion. Maybe it is my devotion to honor the life I have been given, the time I have been gifted to develop my consciousness.
As music can be explained very differently by people, so can devotion. I resonate with the music which lifts me into different states of being and I feel the devotion for these states. So for me devotional music is sound which carries me beyond this reality and also brings me back safely.
Some feel devotion for God and I feel devotion for music as a vehicle to reach that place I call the divine. That place is like coming home. I relax, breathe, restore and continue my path.
