2020 Issue 25 • Nov 29

By Jessica Dibb, host of the Enneagram Global Summit

We all dream of living a life of meaning, purpose, fulfillment, and love… and deep in our hearts and souls wish that for everyone.

What if we could integrate all of our potential to self-actualize that vision for our own lives AND simultaneously help build a world in which everyone could flourish?

That vision is more urgent and compelling than ever before as we live through a global pandemic that’s affecting life for everyone — and we are even more aware of the global impacts of racial injustice and climate degradation on ALL.

For personal, relational, and global wellbeing to emerge and be sustainable, we have to be able to experience oneness, while also addressing the differentiated needs and capacities of ourselves and others.

Is there an orientation towards inner work and personal growth that can support that degree of integration? Yes, and it is one of the three fastest growing modalities in the human potential movement this year.

I am honored to be one of 55 teachers, as well as the host, of the FREE 5-day Enneagram Global Summit from December 7- 11. Now in its seventh year, this popular summit features its largest faculty ever — and is covering an even greater depth and breadth than before.

In session after session, you’ll hear from master Enneagram teachers, therapists, people in service sectors, social activists, and researchers about how personal healing and transformation, inner work, spiritual paths, relationships, education, social justice issues, the arts, prison work, policing, trauma, feminine and masculine empowerment, healthcare, and more are supported and enhanced by working with the universal patterns of energy that the Enneagram teaches.

This summit is a highly curated event that’s designed to help you build powerful pathways of transformation for yourself and the world. Together we’ll create a learning and practice community, guided by renowned teachers such as Dr. Dan Siegel, Helen Palmer, Russ Hudson, Dr. Dick Schwartz, Cynthia Bourgeault, Dr. Deborah Egerton, Suzanne Stabile, Dr. Judith Orloff, and more. There’s also music, comedy, and deeply intimate sharings about personal and collective trauma and repair!

We’ll be embarking on a voyage, a journey of consciousness that leads to deeper and higher integration, embodying awakened presence, wisdom, and love.

I welcome you to join us to discover, laugh, cry, heal, transform, awaken, and be inspired to live life like never before.

A note from Aliah MaJon, Chief Inclusion Officer for The Shift Network:

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush declared the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month, now commonly referred to as Native American Heritage Month. This November, I personally consider it a tremendous privilege to honor the First Nations peoples of the United States, the original inhabitants of this country that is now home to us all.

It is my intention in this hand-picked collection of materials to both educate myself and inform others about what we may not know by providing you with a glimpse into the stories of our far too often forgotten sisters and brothers, the centuries-old stewards of this land.

To help set the tone, I'd like to share this statement I found in Wikipedia: "The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in what is now the United States at least 15,000 years ago, possibly much earlier, from Asia via Beringia. A vast variety of peoples, societies, and cultures subsequently developed."

I hope you enjoy these offerings...

What really happened four centuries ago? USA Today asks: After a Summer of Racial Reckoning, Is America Ready to Learn the Truth About Thanksgiving?

Shift Network Course Manager Gillian Shelley, a fierce advocate for racial justice and healing, offers a thought-provoking perspective on how to best honor and celebrate "Thanksgrieving."

In two brief videos, Larissa FastHorse shares The Harsh Truth About Thanksgiving while Native American Girls Describe the REAL History Behind Thanksgiving.

The Wampanoag, a Native American tribe from the northeastern United States, were there when the Pilgrims arrived in 1620 and they are still there today. Learn about their lives long ago by meeting two modern-day Wampanoag girls in this 7-minute video.

We also want to take this opportunity to honor and celebrate the wisdom and culture of Indigenous peoples. In these illuminating TEDx talks, LoVina Louie explains the historical root causes for the challenges facing many Native Americans, while Gregg Deal talks about the use of history as a tool, and challenges those who hear his words to take responsibility for their knowledge and create room for this nation’s First Peoples.

We can continue to learn from Native Americans, who view all life as sacred, as we all work to heal the Earth together. Click here to discover seven values from the Lakota Sioux tribe that are central to their teachings, ceremonies, and beliefs.

EDITOR’S NOTE: “The Master Key” by Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2020 Energy Medicine & Healing Summit, is one of the most profoundly important books I’ve ever read. I can say that it’s life-changing with complete confidence, because it changed my life before I even finished reading it. I was so impressed with this book that we are serializing the section called “One Hundred Days of Darkness and Light” in future issues of Catalyst. You can read the twenty-sixth installment (as well as the previous ones) here.
— Phil Bolsta

The uplifting stories in this issue’s “The Nicest Thing” section come from rainforest herbalist Adriana Ayales… voice pioneer Chloë Goodchild….

… and summit speakers Dr. Judith Orloff, psychiatrist and bestselling author… and Deborah Egerton, the founder and president of Trinity Transition Consultants.

Finally, we’d love to hear your answer to the question, How has knowing your Enneagram results impacted your daily life? To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.

One of the main reasons that we resist changing is that the movement back to our Essence always entails feeling the pain of our self-abandonment. When we are willing to say, “I want to be who I really am, and I want to live in the truth,” the process of recovering ourselves has already begun.
― Enneagram Resources Series, The Wisdom of the Enneagram

You are invited to a 5-day, 40-session global event with teachers from almost every continent on this planet, initiating us and taking us on a journey of healing, consciousness, transformation, love, wisdom, and presence for ourselves, for our relationship, and for the healing and benefit of our entire planet.

We will be using the Enneagram as one of the resounding threads that go through this conference. The Enneagram is a system that came from ancient times about how it is that human beings manifest nine different essential energies through nine different temperaments — we can also find those patterns running through all of life. This summit is designed to help you tap into all nine of those energies so that you can experience wholeness of yourself and wholeness in your relationships… and you can be a contribution to the world.

The Master Key
By Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2019 Qigong Global Summit

It's 1972 in the industrial city of Xiangtan, China. A frail child with a heart condition sneaks into a hotel boiler room and befriends the elderly yet vibrant attendant, who eventually reveals his true identity as a revered Qigong master. He heals the boy and, for the next 13 years, secretly teaches him the keys to unlocking the spiritual and healing dimensions of the Life Force.

It sounds like a modern-day fable, but the story is true. And with The Master Key, that grateful student, Robert Peng, invites all of us to enter the next chapter of this empowering path. Here, Master Peng brings together the unique insights of his teacher with the moving account of his own journey.

Click here to read the twenty-sixth installment (as well as all the previous installments) of this profoundly moving book.

Adriana Ayales’s Story
Rainforest herbalist and Shift faculty

EXCERPT: I was a little girl. I was probably eight years old, but it was such a profound story for me because I remember coming out of school late and I was waiting for my mom to pick me up at school, and I was just there hanging out, everybody had left and I was sitting on the sidewalk. And it was a mystical experience. This lady walked by and she had an iguana on her shoulder, and I looked up and I had this thick science book and my backpack was heavy and I was all sad that my mom was late.

Adriana’s brand-new 5-week live video training, Indigenous Plant Medicine & Rituals From the Rainforest: Combine Healing Plants With Curanderismo Ceremonies for Physical, Spiritual & Energetic Wellbeing, begins Monday, December 7. For more details, click here.

Chloë Goodchild’s Story
Voice pioneer and Shift faculty

EXCERPT: The energy and the atmosphere of this place, taking us back to pre-Christian times, and then hearing this incredible vibration coming through my voice inside one of these caves. In fact, my friend Ingrid, who took me there, told me that she'd taken a Peruvian shaman there quite recently and he'd said that he was convinced that it was a vortex that was connected like a song line or a vibrational ley line with Peru, right over to Peru. It was so profound. When I sounded, it was like disappearing down into the deepest part of myself that I've ever, ever encountered. And not only that, the sound was not only coming through me as I was sounding in this cave, but it seemed to be coming from all around me.

To watch the video and read the transcript of Chloë’s 4-minute story about her reptile-loving guardian angel, click here.

Chloë will be presenting a free hour-long video event on Saturday, December 12, called Find Your Soul’s Voice & the Joy of Oneness: Explore Your Voice’s Vibrational Energy to Transform Difficult Emotions & Reveal Your Eternal Identity. For more details — and to register for this free event — click here.

Dr. Judith Orloff’s Story
Psychiatrist, bestselling author, and a featured speaker in the Enneagram Global Summit

EXCERPT: I’d never had a boyfriend before, and so going through the first boyfriend experience or the first partner experience, it's so sacred to have... Who goes through that with you? She went through that with me and she supported me. And girls need support going through that first love experience. And down the road, he dumped me and left me precipitously for this blonde-haired, blue-eyed cheerleader. And I was more the girl by the auditorium, the outsider. And he left me and it was just this huge, huge wound.

To watch the video and read the transcript of Judith’s 6-minute story of friendship and loss, click here.

Deborah Egerton's Story
Founder and president of Trinity Transition Consultants, and a featured speaker in the Enneagram Global Summit

EXCERPT: As the cars were all passing by, he came up to my window and I reached into my purse to give him something. That's not always been my practice. Usually I like to take people and give them something to eat or what have you. But there was something on that day that touched my heart and said, "Go ahead and give him some money." I pulled over to the side out of the traffic, and I went into my purse, and I handed him a $20 bill.

Differing Gifts of Consciousness
By Walter Geldart, a featured speaker in the Enneagram Global Summit

Consciousness is a gift because it permits us to be aware of external real objects in public events, internal subjective objects in private events, and intersubjective intentional objects which are dynamically created in mind when two people know and understand what the other person is thinking about or experiencing using language. A Prison Of Our Own Making
By Susan Olesek, a featured speaker in the Enneagram Global Summit

I cut my teeth learning how to teach the Enneagram in prison. I first went “inside” as a 36-year-old, at-home-mom of three young boys, armed with a BA in sociology and an idealism that often landed me in risky pursuits, but never behind bars. Among my first incarcerated students were a man on the FBI’s “most dangerous” list who spent 26 years in the correctional system; a serial bank robber; a former PhD student with a 16-year crystal meth addiction; a gang leader of the Nortenos; and a 65-year-old grandma in for embezzlement. Reclaiming the Art of Dying
By Shift faculty Robert Moss

Our fear of death is bound up with our confusion about who we are. We fear losing all the props, connections, and résumés that we confuse with identity. We are terrified of being stripped of rank and title and credit cards and cell phones and being sent naked into the next world, as Inanna must descend naked into the underworld. Living From the World of Blessings and Choice Points
By Shift faculty Mona Delfino

I was on the bus with Hoyt Axton for about a half-hour as he gave me a tour. I gave him my phone number and pleaded with him to take me on the road! As I said my goodbyes, he turned to me and said, “Little darlin’, the drugs on this bus are too much and I wouldn’t want to see you get involved. You’re too beautiful and kind to be ruined by this.” Well, I promised I wouldn’t do drugs and told him this would still be a dream come true. I prayed for weeks so hard I probably bombarded every spirit in the spirit world! After a while, I felt my prayers weren’t heard. I cried for what seemed like forever. I waited by the phone, made bets with God, you name it! Were my prayers left unheard? To read more, click here.

Between Amy Cooper’s Oscar worthy Central Park performance, Ahmaud Arbery shooting death in Georgia, Breonna Taylor’s assassination inside her Louisville home, and the Minneapolis murder of George Floyd, black people in America are running on fumes. We’re tired, angry, confused and yet, this space is familiar to us. This place of torment and trauma has become a home of sorts. To read more, click here.

An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States
By Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

Today in the United States, there are more than five hundred federally recognized Indigenous nations comprising nearly three million people, descendants of the 15 million Native people who once inhabited this land. The centuries-long genocidal program of the U.S. settler-colonial regime has largely been omitted from history. Acclaimed historian and activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz offers a history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples and reveals how Native Americans, for centuries, actively resisted expansion of the U.S. empire.

Native American Rights Fund

The three main tenets of this nonprofit involve using legal advocacy to help create a world where “1. Native Americans’ rights, resources, and lifeways are intact and protected. 2. Promises made to Native peoples are upheld. 3. Tribes are able to exercise their sovereign right to manage their own affairs.” Why is this important? The history of broken treaties between the U.S. government and sovereign tribes, in addition to the countless human rights violations since colonizers showed up on America’s shores, have compounding repercussions today, like voter suppression.
