2020 Issue 24 • Nov 15

By Dondi Dahlin, co-host of the Energy Medicine & Healing Summit

When I was seven years old, my mom asked me if she could trace my meridians. I stood there while her hands flowed around my body, across my skin, up my front, and down my back, from my head to my toes. It felt soothing and uplifting at the same time.

It was my first formal step into Energy Medicine. Little did I know what a historic moment that was in my life, and how much joy, wellness, and health it would bring me even 45 years later.

People constantly ask me how the women in my family are so vibrant, healthy, and joyful. I can honestly say that it’s because we’ve always worked with our energies. It is because of Energy Medicine!

My mom (Donna Eden) is a pioneer in Energy Medicine, a practical, efficient, full-spectrum approach to physical and emotional conditions. Energy Medicine strengthens the body, mind, and spirit to achieve greater wellbeing, peace, and a passion for life.

The best part about Energy Medicine is that it empowers you to take your health into your own hands! Energy Medicine is filled with techniques that can be utilized on an at-home, self-help basis to rebalance the body so health can be maintained, improved, or restored.

You can discover these techniques during the Energy Medicine and Healing Summit, taking place November 16-20. The variety of speakers is so exciting that my co-host, Kris Ferraro, and I could barely contain ourselves when we saw the final list of the 35 speakers...

Anodea Judith, Dr. Dawson Church, Dr. Sue Morter, Rollin McCraty, Dr. Marie Mbouni, Robert Peng, Lisseth Makhael, Dr. Judith Orloff, Donna Eden, Jean Haner, and more!

One of the most intriguing aspects of this summit is the variety of the topics. Healing is not a “one size fits all” modality! The Energy Medicine elixir that will work for you might be color therapy; for your best friend it might be chakra healing; for your mom it could be the Five Elements; for your daughter it might be tapping; for your son it could be Qigong; and for your spouse it might be Energy Medicine Yoga.

The world of Energy Medicine is rich with protocols and modalities all to help balance your body’s energies, which is at the heart of all the different healing techniques. What surprises many people is that the techniques are simple but also incredibly profound and can work quickly.

You may have been told that Western medicine cannot help you and you’re looking for something that can. Or you may love your traditional doctor, but want to dip your toe into some natural healing. Join us! We invite you into the world of Energy Medicine and healing.

Wherever you are in your journey, the Energy Medicine and Healing Summit will help you move forward with health and vitality, and the feeling that life is getting better and better!

A note from Aliah MaJon, Chief Inclusion Officer for The Shift Network:

It goes without saying that the election of the first Woman of Color Vice President of the United States is a historic milestone for our democracy and an enormous example of inclusion; however, what this means for each of us personally may be different depending on who we are.

For me, as an African American woman who has spent several decades of my life supporting people and organizations to dismantle unfounded barriers and make a place for everyone at the table of progress, this development fills me with tremendous joy, for it means that this country has learned that not only have certain of us been excluded, our society has — literally — been missing out on valuable genius that can bring about good!

To commemorate and celebrate this historic achievement, we’d like to share the following insightful and illuminating articles with you.

TIME magazine explored the historic barriers that Kamala Harris overcame on her journey to the White House.

Nikita Gupta writes in The Lily that Kamala Harris shows my Black and Indian daughter that her story is the American story: “Kamala D. Harris is the vice president-elect of the United States of America. That sentence brings unspeakable euphoria and jubilation to my heart.”

Mental Floss shares 13 trailblazing facts about Kamala Harris, while you can listen to Kamala’s full 13-minute victory speech here: “You chose truth.”

Watch Senator Kamala Harris speaks out on police reform here, and watch Kamala and Senator Cory Booker introduce the Justice and Policing Act here.

At September's "Shift Summit & Music Festival," Ruby Flores, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer for the LAPD, delivered the keynote address for a segment called “Is It Police Reform… Retribution… Or, What?” for the Racial Justice stage offerings. It was so informative and inspiring that we wanted to share it with you here: "Toward Change: The Breakaway Plan of a Los Angeles Police Commander."

EDITOR’S NOTE: “The Master Key” by Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2020 Energy Medicine & Healing Summit, is one of the most profoundly important books I’ve ever read. I can say that it’s life-changing with complete confidence, because it changed my life before I even finished reading it. I was so impressed with this book that we are serializing the section called “One Hundred Days of Darkness and Light” in future issues of Catalyst. You can read the twenty-fifth installment (as well as the previous ones) here.
— Phil Bolsta

The uplifting stories in this issue’s “The Nicest Thing” section come from seven speakers in the Energy Medicine and Healing Summit: health intuitive Masami Covey

... and six luminaries who are also Shift faculty — intuitive healer Cyndi Dale, psychiatrist Dr. Judith Orloff, sound healer Eileen McKusick, energy healer Wendy De Rosa, chakra expert Anodea Judith, and science writer Dawson Church.

Finally, we’d love to hear your answer to the question, What energy medicine practice resonates with you the most, and why? To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.

When all your energies are brought into harmony, your body flourishes. And when your body flourishes, your soul has a soil in which it can blossom in the world. These are the ultimate reasons for energy medicine — to prepare the soil and nurture the blossom.

A Miraculous Acknowledgment of a WWI Ancestor on 11/11
By Lisa Bonnice, Award-Winning Author and Program Host for The Shift Network

It’s 11/11, Veterans Day in the United States. For many New Agers, seeing all ones on the calendar or clock has an angelic meaning, especially at 11:11 on 11/11. In fact, I just happened to be awake at 1:11 this morning and took a screenshot on my phone. Today, however, I’m reminded of something that happened over a hundred years ago — the celebration of Armistice Day and the end of WWI — and I’ve got a marvelous story to tell about synchronicity and an honored ancestor. The Master Key
By Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2020 Energy Medicine & Healing Summit

It's 1972 in the industrial city of Xiangtan, China. A frail child with a heart condition sneaks into a hotel boiler room and befriends the elderly yet vibrant attendant, who eventually reveals his true identity as a revered Qigong master. He heals the boy and, for the next 13 years, secretly teaches him the keys to unlocking the spiritual and healing dimensions of the Life Force.

It sounds like a modern-day fable, but the story is true. And with The Master Key, that grateful student, Robert Peng, invites all of us to enter the next chapter of this empowering path. Here, Master Peng brings together the unique insights of his teacher with the moving account of his own journey.

Click here to read the twenty-fifth installment (as well as all the previous installments) of this profoundly moving book.

Masami Covey’s Story
Health intuitive and a featured speaker in the Energy Medicine & Healing Summit

EXCERPT: I know that she could see that I was becoming increasingly angry... really, really deeply resentful and angry at the world — in part, because I totally felt alone and I didn't have a home to go back to, or the family that I could connect with. And so one day she said that she and her husband Larry wanted me to live with them and use their spare room, which was their daughter's room. And at that time, I didn't know that they had lost their only daughter a year earlier in a car accident. I ended up staying at their home, and for the first time in my life I witnessed a deep, loving, and caring relationship — and unbearable grief of losing their only child.

The World Mirrors the Heart
By Robert Peng, a featured speaker in the Energy Medicine & Healing Summit

Xiao Yao would go through the same routine each time inside the temple. First, he would walk up to one of the Buddha statues, meditate in front of it for a while, and then work his way around the room, spending a few moments with all the other statues. Some temples had hundreds of statues. If we were pressed for time, he would pause for only a few seconds in front of each one. But if we had more time, he would close his eyes with his hands in prayer position and remain in a deep meditative state for a long while. To read more, click here.

Time to Let Go of That One Magic Pill
By Lisseth Makhael, a featured speaker in the Energy Medicine & Healing Summit

A lot is going on in the world right now. So many of us seem to think that the planet is going awry. But those of us who remember the path of ascension know that yes! it is getting worse only to get better. To understand this better I want you to imagine how you’d upgrade/remodel a kitchen or a bathroom. First, you destroy the old and then build the new in the space that has been opened up. Sure, that process creates a lot of chaos, and that’s exactly what we’re going through right now. To read more, click here.

A Yoga for Our Times
By Shift faculty Wendy Black Stern

Our approach to healing begins with learning how to be present with ourselves and to be a witness for what is going on inside of us without judgement. “What am I noticing in my physical body? What is the primary emotion or feeling of my grief? What thoughts are rising to the surface as I feel my grief within me? What is the wisdom of my spiritual body or soul?” Self-knowledge or awareness is the first engagement. To read more, click here.

Spark: A Systemic Racism Story

Entrepreneur, author, and inspirational speaker Tom Gegax spent the pandemic, alongside his social-justice fighting friends, making a short film about systemic racism. He was inspired by people who were marching to protest the death of George Floyd in his hometown of Minneapolis. This 32-minute video, which explores racism's roots and remedies, was produced by the Gegax Family Foundation as a gift to individuals, businesses, organizations, and schools. Racism Is Not a Historical Footnote
By NBA legend Bill Russell

I once interviewed Lester Maddox on my television show. It was 1969 and he was well known at the time as a Southern segregationist and former chicken restaurateur turned politician. Maddox and I had diametrically opposing perspectives. He got out of the restaurant business after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed so that he wouldn’t have to serve Black people, while I once refused to play an exhibition game after a restaurant refused to serve me or my Black teammates. Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man

In this popular video series, former NFL player and sports analyst Emmanuel Acho sits down to have an “uncomfortable conversation” with white America, in order to educate and inform them about racism, system racism, social injustice, rioting, and the hurt African Americans are feeling today.

In the episode, “Karens & Cancel Culture w/Chelsea Handler,” Emmanuel sits down with comedian and bestselling author Chelsea Handler to have an uncomfortable conversation about "Karens," cancel culture, and her own white privilege.

In the episode “A Conversation with the Police,” Emmanuel sits down with police officers from the Petaluma Police Department in Petaluma, California (where The SHift Network is headquartered). They discuss polarizing topics like defunding the police, Black Lives Matter, and accountability in the police force surrounding the tragic deaths of black civilians.

For more insight into the dynamics of police and race, watch this TEDx Talk, ‘Policing in America: The Road to Reconciliation,” by Danielle Outlaw, the Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department...

… and this TED Talk, “How We Can Make Racism a Solvable Problem — and Improve Policing,” by justice scientist Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff on the website of Center for Policing Equity website, which measures bias in policing.

In the article, ”From Warriors to Guardians: Recommitting American Police Culture to Democratic Ideals,” authors Sue Rahr and Stephen K. Rice state: “As a profession, we have veered away from Sir Robert Peel’s ideal, “the police are the people, and the people are the police,” toward a culture and mindset more like warriors at war with the people we are sworn to protect and serve.” To read more, click here.

Dear Black Girls
By A’ja Wilson of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces

This is for all the girls with an apostrophe in their name. This is for all the girls who are “too loud” and “too emotional.” This is for all the girls who are constantly asked, “Oh, what did you do with your hair? That’s new.” This is for my Black girls. Let me tell you a story, and maybe you can relate. It started with a birthday party. (How come it feels like so much drama always happens at birthday parties?!?!) To read more, click here.

Center for Policing Equity

Center for Policing Equity measures bias in policing. That means we can stop it.

One in five Americans interacts with law enforcement yearly. Of those encounters, one million result in use of force. And if you’re Black, you are two to four times more likely to have force used than if you are White.

Working directly with police to measure behaviors and revise policies results in fewer people killed and fewer people in jail.
