By Stephen Dinan, founder and President of The Shift Network

Covid-19 is the most dramatic “black swan” event to hit humanity in decades, leading to unprecedented economic shocks and real suffering. Like any crisis, it can lead to a breakdown on the other side… or a breakthrough.

The first phase of navigating this crisis has necessarily focused on preventing more damage through social isolation and protecting frontline workers. But now, as we begin the slow and tentative process of releasing the social distancing, hopefully not too fast, I think our attention should be on how we can turn this time into a breakthrough — a positive Shift for humanity rather than simply a tragedy for us to get beyond.

Can we use this as a time to accelerate our turn to sustainable energy? Locally-grown food and resilient communities? Can we use this opportunity to reform our justice system? Can we revitalize our democracy and reform our health care?

Whenever we engage in a spiritual retreat, we remove ourselves from our old habits — and a new interior landscape opens up. On a vision quest, we remove social engagement, and often even food and water in order to access a better, deeper, and wiser vision for our lives.

So what is the vision of the world that we want to create and how can this crisis propel us towards it? That is where my focus is now turning, and we’ve invited articles and showcased visionaries in this issue who are lighting the way forward.

Yes, we need to respect that not everyone’s circumstances allow bold thinking right now. A lot of us are struggling to survive on a basic level.

But can this propel us forward? Can this propel us to launch new, innovative businesses that help to heal the world? Can it propel shifts towards more remote work, more natural living, and more vibrant lifestyles?

I believe the answer is yes. And if there’s a critical mass of us dedicated to shifting our world forward out of this crisis, we may well look at this time as a moment not of dying collectively but of birthing a new possibility for the world.

We will be showcasing more and more people who are architecting this future in the months ahead, and we look forward to hearing more about your own positive stories of turning a crisis into an opportunity for evolution. Please send inspiring stories to editor@theshiftnetwork.com and enjoy the articles in this issue, which range from greening the economy to psychological renewal.

I want to draw particular attention to our Board member Stacey Lawson’s reflections below that offer a good overview of positive opportunities. We also have articles on shifting to an interconnected culture, how “normal” was killing us, and a wonderful piece from Mikhail Gorbachev.

I also encourage you to watch the recording of my State of the Shift address, which I do every May 1 as a way to chronicle the progress we’re making collectively towards creating the more beautiful future we know is possible.

EDITOR’S NOTE: “The Master Key” by Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2019 Qigong Global Summit, is one of the most profoundly important books I’ve ever read. I can say that it’s life-changing with complete confidence, because it changed my life before I even finished reading it. I was so impressed with this book that we are serializing the section called “One Hundred Days of Darkness and Light” in future issues of Catalyst. You can read the thirteenth installment (as well as the previous ones) here.
— Phil Bolsta

The uplifting story in this issue’s “The Nicest Thing” section comes from Bevin Niemann, the founder of 1 Million Empaths, whose new 8-week live video training, Mastering Your Energetic Field as an Empath or Highly Sensitive Person, begins Wednesday, May 6.

Finally, we’d love to hear your answer to the question, What is your vision for the post-pandemic world to come? To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.

In every crisis there is a message. Crises are nature’s way of forcing change — breaking down old structures, shaking loose negative habits so that something new and better can take their place.
— Susan L. Taylor

The Master Key
By Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2019 Qigong Global Summit

It's 1972 in the industrial city of Xiangtan, China. A frail child with a heart condition sneaks into a hotel boiler room and befriends the elderly yet vibrant attendant, who eventually reveals his true identity as a revered Qigong master. He heals the boy and, for the next 13 years, secretly teaches him the keys to unlocking the spiritual and healing dimensions of the Life Force.

It sounds like a modern-day fable, but the story is true. And with The Master Key, that grateful student, Robert Peng, invites all of us to enter the next chapter of this empowering path. Here, Master Peng brings together the unique insights of his teacher with the moving account of his own journey.

Click here to read the thirteenth installment (as well as all the previous installments) of this profoundly moving book.

Bevin Niemann's Story
Shift Network faculty and founder of 1 Million Empaths

EXCERPT: And this is what I think they would call one of those crucial conversations. I was really startled by it, kind of taken aback a little bit. And then I realized this was really coming from a place of love and caring. And she said, "I want you to do this so much that I'm going to allow you to flex your hours and flex your days off and so forth so that you can arrange your schedule." And that is exactly what she did. She wrote me a letter of recommendation to be able to get back in. And actually, because I had failed my last semester, I had to stand in front of a group of faculty and talk about what happened and why I knew that I could be a different kind of student, which is a very humbling experience...

A Sacred Opportunity to Reimagine Liberty and Justice for All
By Shift Borad member Stacey Lawson

The pandemic has roused us from our unconscious trance of separation, given us a glimpse of the resiliency of nature when relieved from human meddling, and disrupted our habitual patterns of consumption. From the ashes of our previous “normal” we can either return to our old ways or allow the crisis to catalyze an evolutionary leap forward — using its hardships and insights to re-imagine, re-inspire, and rewire a more sustainable, just, and prosperous future. Psychological Renewal in a Time of Crisis
By Caroline Shola Arewa

Spring is the season of new beginnings; what better time to make a massive shift? Traditionally, it’s a time to cleanse your body, clear your mind, declutter your environment, and create more space in your life. As we lock down due to the pandemic, it is the perfect time to shake off the mud and rise in all your beauty.

Coping with the Mental Health Crisis of Covid-19: A Resilience Perspective
By Dr. Paul T. P. Wong, founder and President of the International Network on Personal Meaning and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Existential Psychology and Psychotherapy.

Viktor Frankl describes his concept of tragic optimism in the following way:

I speak of tragic optimism, that is, an optimism in the face of tragedy and in view of the human potential which at its best always allows for: (1) turning suffering into a human achievement and accomplishment; (2) deriving from guilt the opportunity to change oneself for the better; and (3) deriving from life’s transitoriness an incentive to take responsible action.

In the above quote, he assured us that suffering could be good for you if you had the right understanding and the right attitude. I want to briefly discuss the three main points that could empower you to transform your trials and tribulations into a hero’s journey. To read more, click here.

Powered by Love — an Emerging Worldview
By Shift faculty James O’Dea

Then along comes something like the Covid-19 virus in the form of a pandemic giving us master lessons on several fronts. It demonstrates how, in an interconnected world, the quantitative approach becomes a global house of cards: a virus that started in China not only kills tens of thousands of people in dozens of countries, it kicks tens of millions across the world out of work tanking whole economies. But it also reveals important facets of the qualitative worldview in an interdependent world: we learn in graphic ways how the choices we make can mean life or death for others; we learn how science and compassion can synergize to not only save lives but deepen our social bonds. Changing the Way We Live
By Michelle Johnson

I could not have predicted this pandemic or that life and human connection would change so rapidly and drastically. I didn’t know we would be called into physical distancing or innovating new ways to connect. I have never experienced a time quite like this but my heart knew we needed to change the way we were living. I knew we needed to shift the way we were-our consciousness, behaviors and cultural conditioning. It seems as if this pandemic has called us into reflecting on every action we take with awareness of how our actions affect other people. To read more, click here.

Normal Was Killing Us
By Cylvia Hayes

In the next weeks, as the economic pain and fear increases, the clamor to “get back to normal” is going to ramp up. Some politicians, sensing political opportunity, are already stoking that foment. The outcry for normalcy will certainly gain momentum. The point that must be recognized and discussed, that begs our attention, is the fact that “normal” was killing us. To read more, click here.

When Wisdom is Not Found: What Older People Are For
By Zhen Dao

For the lives of the young have all but come to a halt, as have the lives of us all. Our lives have come to a halt, we would explain to this bright and normally quite considerate boy, or young man, depending on the prism one is looking through — our lives have been halted in order to keep massive numbers of older and frailer people from dying unnecessarily, if we can help it. But our young friend has a love interest he cannot kiss, and friends he cannot embrace, and wild and sweet times of irretrievable youth that are slipping through the sieve of his restless hours. Connecting his “house arrest” to curtailing the mortality curve of the elderly represents too hard a calculus for him to bear at such a time in his life… as youth.

When The Pandemic Is Over, The World Must Come Together
By Mikhail Gorbachev

The immediate challenge today is to defeat this new, vicious enemy. But even today, we need to start thinking about life after it retreats. Many are now saying the world will never be the same. But what will it be like? That depends on what lessons will be learned.

I recall how in the mid-1980s, we addressed the nuclear threat. The breakthrough came when we understood that it is our common enemy, a threat to all of us. The leaders of the Soviet Union and the U.S. declared that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.

We Are Enough
By Jeff Krasno, founder and host of OneCommune.com

Soon enough, you will feel the gale force winds of corporate globalism chafing your face. It will scream, “Back to normal!” — a clarion call to return to the shopping mall, book that vacation trip, buy that new television. These messages will be cloaked in patriotic slogans like “support American workers.” To read more, click here.

Prepare for the Ultimate Gaslighting
By Julio Vincent Gambuto

Pretty soon, as the country begins to figure out how we “open back up” and move forward, very powerful forces will try to convince us all to get back to normal. (That never happened. What are you talking about?) Billions of dollars will be spent on advertising, messaging, and television and media content to make you feel comfortable again. To read more, click here.

Dreaming Your Way Into a Better Future
Video interview with Shift faculty Robert Moss

Robert, how can we dream ourselves into a better future?

What a very interesting question. In a sense, the time is always now. As you become more of a dreamer, you get to know this. As a dreamer you travel across time, you travel into the possible future. You're rehearsed for challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. And you do more than that. You do more than see things that might lie beyond the ordinary horizon. Mirabai Starr on Turning Grief Into Growth
Video interview with Shift faculty Mirabai Starr

I think a lot of people are definitely grappling with sorrow and sadness and anxiety and a sense of deep loss during these times, either because they've directly lost someone or are worrying about someone or dealing with their own fragile health or just simply tuning into the suffering in the world and the falling away of a lot of the structures that have held us up that we've relied upon and taken for granted in some ways. The Through Line
By Clare Dubois, founder of TreeSisters

I just want to acknowledge and send love to all of you out there who are really struggling right now, who are really struggling. Many of us know people who have got Covid, who've lost people due to Covid, who are ill right now, and the myriad of different ways in which this is affecting all of us so, so much. And there are no words really, there's just the process of getting through it. And I've found prayer extremely useful, especially for those that I love who I'm fearful for either because they're very ill or they're hanging on, or they're alone. But somehow here we are. And so how do we navigate this? And so I wanted to share an analogy…

Far I Shields
Multi-hyphenate artist

My name is Far I Shields. I have four major forms of expression: art, music, writing, and green enterprise development.

Art — My first memories of painting were with my grandfather. I remember cherished moments where he taught me the general concepts of art, like shading and taking full deep breaths to keep a steady hand. For me, painting and drawing are methods of spending time with the Divine Mother. I learn, create, and enjoy, together with the Source of all things. Currently, I have nine of my paintings online that can be printed as wall art, shirts, mugs, and a variety of other items.

Music — In high school, I asked my parents for a saxophone for my birthday. After paying for my own lessons at a local jazz studio in Los Angeles, I was not feeling the joy. I decided to try playing along with the radio. It was at this moment that I found my freedom and love for making music. My musical journey continues. We currently have a 4-piece band and are available for performances. We play all original music; the songs are available on iTunes and here.

Writing — This is a daily practice for me and my most natural state of expression. I have produced four books, which are available on my website.

Eco Commerce — the most thought-intensive form of expression for me. I am the founder of Green Cleaning. We provide healthy janitorial, porter, carpet cleaning, and housekeeping services in the San Francisco Bay Area for residential and commercial clients. Our team and clients bring me tremendous joy and comradery. To learn more about my green activities please visit here.
