Films for the Planet: The best in environmental, transformational and social action films on demand

Films for the Planet is extending a welcome invitation for you to join the World Peace & Global Unity Streaming Film Series in partnership with the World Peace and Global Unity (WPGU) campaign, September 9-24.

The global event, now in its sixth year, has grown to become a collective of hundreds of organizations with an extensive global reach. The purpose of this campaign is to catalyze and quantify the shared impact of globally synchronized activities focused on peace and compassionate action, culminating with an annual global-synchronized meditation in celebration of the International Day of Peace on September 24. We are especially excited because this year promises to be an unprecedented opportunity to unite our hearts and collective capacity for amplifying global good.

The streaming film series will add an exciting new dimension to the campaign. Our goal is to highlight creative content that supports opportunities for learning, sharing and connecting. We aim to inspire bridge-building through cross-cultural understanding while helping individuals and communities move toward an increased global coherence that celebrates connectivity and unifies our hearts through peace and compassion.

To accomplish this, we have selected beautifully produced, award-winning films to be featured on Films for the Planet exclusively for 15 days during the WPGU event. Headlining this event, the documentary, Rooted in Peace, will be streamed for FREE on September 21, the International Day of Peace, offering a unique opportunity to experience this film on the day of its official theatrical release. Rooted in Peace challenges viewers to examine their values as citizens and human beings. Today we are at war within ourselves, with our environment, and with the world. Director and award-winning filmmaker Greg Reitman invites viewers on a film journey to take notice of the world we live in, to proactively seek ways to find personal and ecological peace, and to stop the cycle of violence.

The film relies not only on memoir, but also interviews with such luminaries and activists as Deepak Chopra, music legends Donovan, Mike Love, and Pete Seeger, film director David Lynch, Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire, media mogul Ted Turner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, green architect William McDonough, neuroscientist Dan Siegel and many others. Reitman learns from all of them, and heeds Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s words, that if the forest is to be green, every tree must be green; if there’s going to be Peace on earth, then everybody needs to experience that quality of peace within themselves.

Exceptional documentaries include Planetary, One Day on Earth, A Quest for Meaning, A Voice4Peace, and World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements. These inspirational films cultivate a global culture of peace by covering themes such as Music: The Universal Language of Peace, Celebrating the Connectivity of Peace, The “Interbeing” of Peace and Compassion, and Games for Peace.

Sign up here to watch the series on demand at Films for the Planet where you can access select films for free or starting at $.99 in support of the filmmaker from September 9-24. Virtual theater attendees can access the program anytime and will be emailed timely reminders of the film viewings in addition to value-added learning resources, pre-recorded interviews with guest speakers, and opportunities to take action for those wishing to explore topics further.

A live conversation entitled, “The Neuroscience of Peace: Tapping Into our Hearts’ Intelligence,” is scheduled for September 23 from 9:00am – 10:15am Pacific with HeartMath’s Rollin McCraty, PhD, founder of the Global Coherence Initiative (GCI). Dr. McCraty, Executive Vice President and Director of Research at HeartMath Institute, was one of the early scientific pioneers in the field of personal and global coherence. This event is a prelude to the International Day of Peace global-synchronized meditation and is a complementary addition to the streaming film series.

Time and again we have seen film catalyze civic engagement and ignite social movements through an initial spark of learning and imagination. If you are interested in hosting a film conversation in your home, church, business or community during the World Peace & Global Unity campaign or throughout the year, please sign up to access our Art of Hosting Film resources in our Members Circle.
