If you’re like me, yoga and meditation have become an important way of helping you find peace and balance in what can seem like a chaotic world.
What gives me incredible hope and inspiration is knowing that yoga, an ancient science and art dating back as far as 10,000 years, has spread around the world. Yoga is literally helping transform the world one person, one breath, one posture at a time.
This is why we’re thrilled to celebrate the fourth annual United Nations International Day of Yoga.
Once again, we have gone above and beyond with The Yoga Day Summit. For the fourth year, I traveled to the birthplace of yoga: Rishikesh, India. This year I was accompanied by Sandra de Castro Buffington (founder and former director of the Global Media Center for Social Impact), Richard Bergin (professional videographer), Elaine Carter (Shift producer), and 12 Shift community members.
To watch a 90-second video invitation to the Summit, click here.
For nearly a month, we traveled the banks of the holy Ganges River in the foothills of the Himalayas visiting ashrams and sacred sites, participating in the International Yoga Festival, and interviewing swamis, swaminis, world-renowned yoga teachers, and students. (See my article in Yogic Herald magazine.)
The Yoga Day Summit will feature interviews and presentations from H.H. Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Ana Forrest, Jose Calarco, Shiva Rea, Seane Corn, Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji, Kia Miller,Tommy Miller, Anand Mehrotra and many more.
The Yoga Day Summit will also feature UPLIFT’s new film, The Power of Mantra, a rich sonic exploration of the yoga of sound, featuring Deva Premal & Miten, Dave Stringer, Tina Malia, and many more artists, scientists, and yogis.
The Yoga Day Summit is unlike any other yoga offering in that it will share over 12 hours of free video content, most of it filmed by our team in the birthplace of yoga, that explores the ancient roots and wisdom of yoga and its practical role in modern transformation, including improving health, overcoming addiction, opening to deeper states of love, taking action guided by natural intelligence to improve the world… and ultimately, awakening to self-realization.
The Yoga Day Summit will also feature hatha yoga classes, meditations, and music breaks, all designed to inspire and uplift you.
I am so excited that we can offer you one of the highest-quality video productions available on the ancient roots of yoga and how it can help transform your life and our world.
And we’d love to hear your answer to the question, What’s been the biggest difference in your life since you started doing yoga? To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.
The real Kriya Yoga way (life-force control) is not a bypath. It is the direct highway, the shortest route, to divine realization. It teaches man to ascend heavenward by leading the ego, mind, and life force through the same spinal channel that was used when the soul originally descended into the body. — Paramahansa Yogananda God Talks With Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita
The Yoga Day Summit can be quite literally life changing. In this wonderful 8-minute interview with Cloudia Emefa Nescia Vardon and our Director of Peace Philip Hellmich, Cloudia shares how last year's summit inspired her to go to India earlier this year, and even attend Sattva Yoga Academy, the yoga school founded by Anand Mehrotra, a speaker in The Yoga Day Summit. Behold the power of setting an intention! Be sure to attend this year's free online Yoga Day Summit on June 21. The next life it changes may be your own!

It’s 4am, and a cold wind is blowing in my face. I wrap a blanket tightly around me as I bend and pranam to the Holy Ganges River (Ma Ganga). I offer a prayer of love and gratitude, scoop up a handful of water, anoint my head, and sit to meditate.
As I position myself on a yoga mat, I reflect on the great saints and sages who for thousands of years have reached enlightenment by practicing yoga and meditation along the banks of Ma Ganga and in the surrounding Himalayan caves. The passing thoughts of those who have gone before me increase my gratitude for the opportunity to be meditating in this sacred environment. As I start a Kriya Yoga meditation practice, time seems to disappear and I enter a stillness amidst the sound of Ma Ganga’s flowing waters.
The word “sutra” literally means a thread. In English, if you fall and hurt yourself and have to get stitches, the stitches are called “sutures.” It’s the same concept. It’s a thread that is weaving together — in sutures, it is weaving together our flesh; and in sutras, it is weaving together our lives. This is what the Yoga Sutras are about.
The ancient Indian system of Nāda Yoga is a science of inner transformation through the power of sound. Nāda or Nād yoga is the conscious use of sound vibrations, like chanting, mantra and musical resonances to treat various spiritual and psychological conditions. Practitioners focus their mind in meditation and then use sound to access higher states of consciousness and healing.
The Mahakumbh, which happens once in every twelve years at this holy place is attended by Himalayan saints who come out of the holy mountains to take a bath of immortality and vitality on this pious occasion. Fellow monks and students of spirituality also come along. The Kumbh is considered as the platform for spiritual seekers to meet the saints and find answers to their questions.
The idea of creating your own reality is not a new one...
From Buddha’s teaching, “What you dwell upon you become,” to Jesus’ teaching, “It is done unto you as you believe,” to Hindu mystic Shankaracharya claiming, “Whatever a person’s mind dwells on intensely and with firm resolve, that is exactly what he becomes”...
And from teachers who helped shape the personal and spiritual growth ideas and practices that we practice today — Jose Silva in the ‘60s to Jane Roberts in the ‘70s.
Now, according to bestselling author Dawson Church, PhD, there’s groundbreaking, peer-reviewed scientific research that not only proves you can harness the power of your thoughts to improve your health and create the life you dream of — it shows you how.

First of all, let’s take a look at this mandate: There should be no place where your love light doesn’t shine. Even when the clouds are there. You can make the sunshine. Let love shine your way. Let it shine from day to day. Sing your happy song and let your love just flow along. You can make the sun shine. Any old time. Easy!
My master teacher, Yogi Bhajan, said that “Happiness is your birthright.” So what I just said above is quite a declaration! Let’s take a look at it, first at the personal and then at the global level. Can we ask the hard questions when it may seem like our lives are far-far away from that ideal expressed above? And further, what is the role of Yoga here?

The 2018 Global Peace Index reveals a world in which the tensions, conflicts, and crises that emerged in the last decade remain unresolved, resulting in a gradual, sustained fall in peacefulness. The largest contributors to the deterioration in the last year were the escalations in both interstate and internal armed conflicts, a rise in political terror and reduced commitment to UN peacekeeping. Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq and Somalia are the least peaceful countries whilst Iceland, New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and Denmark are the most peaceful countries.

Racism is examined on four levels: internalized, interpersonal, institutional, and structural. Tools to assess the state of one’s organization and community are introduced. Participants also have the opportunity to participate in caucus groups and bridge the chasm between community and institution throughout their Prism journey. Leaders leave the program with greater self awareness, an individualized plan for beginning to dismantle racism in their neighborhood or organization and greater capacity to do so. They also gain a group of fellow travelers to support them well beyond the structured program experience. Click here for more information.

As an archival songstress, Peia has gathered songs from ancient traditions that span across the globe. She carries melodies wrinkled and wise with time, laboring faithfully to revive their language, stories and original essence.
A powerful voice in the rising global community of people who are committed to restoring a balanced relationship with the Earth, Peia expresses her holistic vision and passion through her music, educational workshops, and advocacy for indigenous and environmental rights groups.
Gifted with a broad, soaring vocal range and crystalline tone, Peia’s song pierces the heart with bell-like clarity. She sings with depth and beauty, accompanying herself with charango, harmonium, and guitar. Her revolving collaborative ensemble weaves rich vocal harmonies, cello, an eclectic array of percussion, and flamenco guitar. Peia’s performances offer authentic re-imaginings of traditional musical treasures along with a stunning repertoire of her original songs.
Peia’s third studio album, Beauty Thunders, is a collection of traditional and original songs tracing the movement of humanity and her own ancestors throughout the ages. Huffington Post wrote: ““The organic sounds of birds twinkle with the steady drone of a harmonium, pulling you into the album like a tractor beam. Peia’s voice soars like the wind as she sings a love letter to our Earth and an ode to humanity.”
