The history of the 24-part set you’ll learn in this course was created by Li Tianji in 1956, when the Chinese government wanted to improve its citizens’ health using traditional exercises. Li was tasked with creating a shortened version of Yang Family Taijiquan.
By eliminating repetitions of movements, he streamlined a set of 108 postures into a powerful 24-part Taijiquan set, retaining the core of the longer set without sacrificing any of its healing value.

Module 1: Move From Stillness Into Movement to Establish Physical & Spiritual Balance (February 9)

Taijiquan is the art of peace. Ming-Dao will help you begin from stillness and calm.
Like Restoring Spring from Huashan Qigong (HQ), we think of new growth and new beginnings. Form 1: Commencing, takes you from stillness into movement in the simplest way — separating your feet and raising your arms together.
Along the way, you’ll mesh your breathing with your movements. As you move from Form 1, it will extend the holding the ball movement from the HQ Peng Flying.
Form 2: Left, Right, Wild Horse Parts Mane, teaches the benefits of stance, strengthens your leg, and shows how to breathe in coordination with body movements. The form extends the opening movement and stances from the HQ Eight Trigrams. It’s the first form to demonstrate the foundational movement to all Taijiquan: the Taijiquan Walk.
In this opening module, you’ll:
- Learn the benefits of stance
- Begin to strengthen your legs
- Learn to breathe in coordination with body movements
- Explore the foundational movement of Taijiquan, the Taijiquan Walk — in which you’ll alternate both assertive and yielding steps as you begin to establish balance
Module 2: Iconic Postures to Improve Your Balance & Facilitate Deeper Breathing (February 16)

As your journey continues, Ming-Dao will guide you to pause in one of the iconic Taijiquan postures, Form 3: White Crane Spreads Wings. You’ll put more weight on one leg and balance in that position, improving your balance.
The circular movements of the arms facilitate powerful breathing, and the stretching of arms relates to HQ Phoenix Spreads Wings.
The next posture, Form 4: Left, Right, Brush Knee Twist Step, resumes your forward movement and combines arm movements with the pivoting of your waist. You must transfer force from your feet to your hands while moving forward in an extension of movement such as HQ Eight Trigrams or HQ Ren Rings…
All the while, you’ll continue your training in the vital Taijiquan Walk.
In this module, you’ll:
- Learn to put more weight on one leg and balance in that position
- Connect arm movements to the pivoting of the your waist
- Experience how movement of the arms facilitates breathing
- Transfer force from your feet to your hands while moving forward
Module 3: Step Backward Without Losing Balance & Twist to Support Kidney Function & Lower Back (February 23)

You’ll pause with the Form 5: Play the Lute. It uses the Seven Star Stance for the first time, providing another perspective on balance. The arms squeeze inward, which forces your breath out of your torsos and helps you expel waste gases.
Then you’ll begin to move backward in Form 6: Left, Right, Reverse Rolling Arms (Monkey Retreat). The stance is different, and you’ll learn to step backward without falling.
Both postures expand on the possibilities of Huashan Qigong.
In this module, you’ll:
- Step backward without losing your balance
- Develop nimbleness and flexibility as you move without looking
- Understand how alternating and pushing with your hands works your lungs
- Discover how twisting your waist helps your kidneys and low back
Module 4: “Grasping the Sparrow’s Tail” to Stimulate Your Internal Organs for Optimal Functioning (March 2)

Grasping the Sparrow’s Tail, which consists of four parts, is considered the most essential of all Yang Style Taijiquan postures.
Forms 7 and 8 are Grasp the Sparrow’s Tail, left and right styles, and the names of the four parts are: Ward Off, Rollback, Press, and Push…
You’ll discover the four kinds of energy that make this the most important movement in all Taijiquan.
Grasp the Sparrow’s Tail is unique to Taijiquan and isn’t well-explored even in other styles of Chinese martial arts or Qigong. However, it does move energy from the Lower Dantian and it circulates energy, so it’s an extension of the purpose of Qigong in general. Its footwork relates especially to HQ 3 The Eight Trigrams and HQ 9 Ren Rings.
In this module, you’ll:
- Discover Grasping the Sparrow’s Tail, the most important movement in all Yang Taijiquan
- Look more closely at the circularity and space of the arms and how that relates to standing meditation
- Pull diagonally across the body
- Examine the twisting of the legs and waist, helping stimulate your internal organs
Module 5: Move in All Four Directions to Relieve Neck Tension & Stimulate the Base of Your Skull & Cerebellum (March 9)

After moving forward and backward, you’ll move sideways.
As Ming-Dao will share, this initial part of Taijiquan teaches you how to move in all four directions. It’s reminiscent of HQ Ren Rings and gives you more insight into how you position yourself…
Form 9: Single Whip stretches the body and expands the chest, which helps breathing. Single Whip teaches how to move from the circularity of both Huashan Qigong and other parts of Taijiquan to straight lines.
In the process, you can see how circular and straight are related, a concept partly introduced by HQ Phoenix Spreads Wings.
Form 10: Cloud Hands picks up on the circular movements of Huashan Qigong. You’ll learn to step sideways and experience the relationship between circular arm movements and breathing.
Cloud hands is related to HQ The Eight Trigrams and HQ The Swimming Frog.
In this module, you’ll:
- Learn to step sideways
- Experience deeper breathing with the Cloud Hands posture
- Coordinate your hands and discover the importance of circular and constant movement
- Explore how turning your head side to side helps neck stiffness, relieves neck tension, and stimulates the base of your skull and the cerebellum
Module 6: Make Room for Deeper Breathing & New Possibilities in Your Practice (March 16)

Form 11: Single Whip repeats Form 9. You’ll gain the benefits of stretching your arms out, making more room for breathing.
Form 12: High Pat on Horse requires standing upright and shifting one’s weight, and it adds new possibilities in relationship to Huashan Qigong. Like HQ Ren Rings, Taijiquan joins acupuncture meridians and moves energy throughout all the channels. This includes the Taoist Microcosmic and Macrocosmic Orbits.
At this halfway point of the course, you’ll review moving through the entire first half of the set. Ming-Dao will also introduce kicking to prepare for upcoming postures.
In this module, you’ll:
- Stretch your arms out, creating more room for deep breathing
- Understand how Taijiquan joins acupuncture meridians and moves energy throughout all the channels
- Explore how Taijiquan moves energy through the Taoist Microcosmic and Macrocosmic Orbits
- Learn how kicking improves balance, gently increases circulation, and strengthens the legs, hips, and lower back
Module 7: Heel Kicks for Stronger Legs, Better Balance & Reduced Stiffness (March 23)

At this point on your journey, Ming-Dao has guided you to move in all four directions.
Now it’s time to turn to balance, core stability, coordination, and flexibility.
Form 13: Right Heel Kick… Form 14: Twin Mountains Strike Ears… and Form 15: Turn Body and Left Heel Kick are challenging movements. That’s a measure of their value, and you can successfully reach for the abilities that they give you.
You’ll learn how kicking helps balance… strengthens the legs, hips, and low back… and gently increases circulation. As you get older, fall risks become more pronounced...
With regular practice, you can avoid this problem. Your legs will get stronger and less stiff. You can acquire an essential ballistic form of stretching.
Antecedents for these postures don’t link directly to Huashan Qigong, so they represent the necessary addition of other movements to your practice. Even so, Huashan Qigong that rises onto the balls of the feet, such as HQ Returning Spring, HQ The Swimming and Smiling Dragon, and HQ The Swimming Frog have introduced easy approaches to balance….
Kicking takes it to a far higher level.
In this module, you’ll:
- Boost your leg strength
- Improve your balance and lessen the risk of falling
- Learn to turn and kick
- Relieve stiffness in legs
- Learn a ballistic form of stretching
Module 8: Standing on One Leg for Greater Breath Control, Flexibility & Balance (March 30)

Forms 16 and 17: Left Lower Body and Stand on One Leg teaches you greater flexibility, the strength of a one-legged squat, breath control, and balance...
Standing on one leg is the maximal balance point of this set. It’s a demanding movement and so it’s the most stimulating technique for strengthening your legs. Huashan Qigong doesn’t have these movements, so these are an important expansion of your potential.
In this module, you’ll:
- Combine greater flexibility with balance
- Acquire a deep and stretched-out stance
- Experience standing on one leg as the maximal balance point of this Taijiquan set
- Explore how stretching and safely performing a partial one-legged squat adds to your leg strength
Module 9: Diagonal Postures to Stretch Your Low Back (April 6)

The set changes again here to offer new directions: diagonal movements.
Form 18: Right, Left Jade Maiden Passes Shuttle shows how to push across the body in one of the most famous postures of Taijiquan. Form 19: Needle at Sea Bottom, gives us another variation on stepping backward and another variation on a one-legged squat. It’s also a good way to stretch your back.
Jade Maiden is most similar to movements such as HQ The Eight Trigrams and HQ Ren Rings. Needle at Sea Bottom represents the bending movements explored in HQ Turtle Retracting Its Head.
In this module, you’ll:
- Push across the body in one of the most famous postures of Taijiquan
- Transfer force from your feet diagonally across your body
- Practice stepping backward
- Stretch your low back while training for another variation of a one-legged squat
Module 10: Generate Force for a Punch to Manifest Qi in Your Movements (April 13)

The set changes direction once again, and this item addresses how to turn in a stable, efficient way.
Form 20: Fan Through Back, adds to the stretching benefits of Single Whip. In its origins as a means of turning to face an attacker from behind, you’ll get a glimpse of Taijiquan’s history as a martial art.
Form 21: Turn Body, Deflect, Parry, and Punch, is a martial arts movement that goes beyond Huashan Qigong. As you learn how to generate force for a punch, you’ll discover how to manifest Qi in your movements.
Fan Through Back as well as Turn Body, Deflect, Parry, and Punch show ways to shift and turn the body, much like HQ The Eight Trigrams and HQ Ren Rings. The overhead movement is reminiscent of HQ Heaven Circles and Earth Circles.
Parry and Punch relates to generating force from the legs, so it represents an expansion of your potential beyond the Qigong.
In this module, you’ll:
- Add to the stretching benefits of Single Whip
- Learn to turn your body and stance to face behind yourself
- Get a glimpse of Taijiquan’s history as a martial art
- Generate force for a punch, learning to manifest Qi in your movements in the process
Module 11: Channel Your Energy to the Lower Dantian & Return to Calm Stillness (April 20)

As you arrive at the final postures of this 24-part set, Ming-Dao will guide you to return to your starting point.
You’ve experienced peaceful stillness at the beginning, turned through a range of movements, and are now headed toward a vital stillness once again.
Form 22: Apparent Close briefly teaches how to yield in place. Rather than the full stepping back of Reverse Rolling Arms, you’ll give way while also standing your ground.
Form 23: Cross Hands gives us a deep squat followed by the rejoining of your energy to channel it to your Lower Dantian. Form 24: Closing, is the transition back to calm stillness.
Qigong usually depends on other movements as well as meditation to return energy to the Lower Dantian. Here, Apparent Close and Cross Hands are a built-in method of reuniting your energy and channeling it to the Lower Dantian for storage. This demonstrates the completeness of Taijiquan.
In this module, you’ll:
- Learn how to sit back and raise your arms to push down
- Acquire a deep squat
- Rejoin your energy and channel it to your Lower Dantian for storage after performing the entire set with all its variations
- Transition into calm stillness
Module 12: Move Steadily Through the Entire Set — To Unite Body, Mind & Spirit & Integrate With Nature for Joy & Peace (April 27)

In this final module, Ming-Dao will review the set as a whole and discuss why you should give yourself over to moving steadily through all the postures.
Ming-Dao will guide you to work out your technical issues in Qigong and drills. Once you acquire the whole set, you’ll concentrate on flow — integration with nature and unity of body, mind, and spirit.

About Deng Ming-Dao

Deng Ming-Dao is an author, artist, and teacher. He is the author of Chronicles of Tao… Everyday Tao… The Living I Ching… The Wisdom of the Tao, and The Way of Heart and Beauty. His books have been translated into 18 languages in Europe and Asia.
Deng Ming-Dao has trained in a variety of Chinese martial arts since 1975. His main styles are Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, and Baguazhang. He’s studied with teachers from Beijing, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Husahan, and Wudangshan, and has given many workshops to introduce Chinese martial arts and Taoist wellness techniques.

Q: What’s a virtual course?
A: It’s a great way to engage live and pre-recorded teachings and each other from the comfort of your home! All you need is a computer, mobile device, or telephone. If there’s more than one person in your household taking the course, you’ll each need your own connection. We use Zoom video conferencing to make it just like an in-person event, where you can ask questions and deepen your exploration of the course themes.
There’s no additional charge for connecting to Zoom with your computer or mobile device. Please note that dialing Zoom from your telephone is a toll call; your telephone service provider will charge you according to your existing long-distance calling plan. International access numbers are available.

Can I still benefit from the course if I miss the live classes?
A: Absolutely! You can stream the recordings and download the transcripts of all course sessions, so you never need to worry about missing live calls. You can also engage with the full community and leaders in our private online community group.
Q: Can you tell me about the private online community group?
A: We’ll have a private online community group for all course participants that will support you in making connections with others, sharing insights, engaging in discussions, and completing homework assignments that can supplement your transformational journey. You’ll have the ability to share your experiences, projects, and growth throughout the course.
Q: Are there scholarships available for this training?
A: Yes, we always make a certain percentage of spaces available for partial scholarships, for those who otherwise would not be able to enroll at the regular rate. If you’d like to apply for a scholarship, please review our guidelines, which include a link to our online application form.
Q: What’s your refund policy?
A: Your satisfaction with The Shift Network and this course is our highest priority! We offer a satisfaction guarantee so that you can sample the course risk-free. The deadline to receive a full refund is February 23, 2023. To request a refund, please click on this refund request form and submit your request. Qualifying refunds will be processed within five business days and an email confirming the refund will be sent. However, we’d love to have a chance to address and resolve your concerns first.
