[Catalyst 2 - 2016] African American Wisdom

By Stephen Dinan, founder and CEO of The Shift Network

It is a delight to share with you an edition of The Catalyst dedicated to African American Wisdom.

February is African American History Month (also known as Black History Month) in the United States.

For the United States and world at large to fully realize our potential we all must face and heal the historic wounds caused by racism, oppression, and a sense of disconnection. It will take all of us to create an inclusive world where we celebrate our differences and rejoice in the things that bring us together. One way to do this is by honoring the beauty, brilliance and wisdom that African Americans are contributing to the world.

This is exactly why we created the African American Wisdom Summit — a free online series in February 2016. Click here to register.

I absolutely love the African American Wisdom Summit! It is created and hosted by Nadirah Adeye, who is an authentic, passionate, powerful and beautiful member of our team. Nadirah is our Faculty Relations Manager and every time she speaks in a staff meeting I am riveted.

For Nadirah, the African American Wisdom Summit comes from her heart, as she wants her beloved son Torin to grow up in a world where he is valued for who he is and the gifts he brings to the world.

In this edition of The Catalyst, we have a heartfelt article by Nadirah about her inspiration for the African American Wisdom Summit. We have a powerful piece: Love Activism: 7 Simple Steps + Daily Practice with Alice Walker. We also have an insightful article by Cynthia James and a look at African American History Month by Daryl Michael Scott. Our Member Profile is from Etoy Ridgnal, a champion community advocate who was inspired by her grandmother and aunts.

We would love to hear from you: How do you use the radical truth of your heart to make the world a better place? Please post a few sentences on this topic on our Facebook page and read what other Shift Network community members are sharing too – click here.

Our Featured Artist is Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, described by Nadirah as a rock star of science. Our Shift Philanthropy features Pearl Jam which is raising money to help Flint, Michigan with clean water.

In the Featured Media, we have the video Lift Every Voice And Sing, MPrynt’s special rendition of the Black National Anthem. We also are sharing a recording from the World Peace Library of Belvie Rooks and Thomas N. DeWolf about racial healing.

We also want to bring special attention to the start of The Gandhi King Season for Nonviolence. Famed Russian-American novelist, and scientist, Vladimir Nabokov looms primary, in a detailed probing of the multi-levels of the human drama in his famous books Lolita, Pale Fire, Ada, and the like. This complexity is juxtaposed with previously unseen materials from his 3000 pages of scientific journaling (from archives at the New York Public Library and Harvard). To learn more, click here.

Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green
By Nadirah Adeye

When I was asked for an artist to feature in this edition of The Catalyst, I immediately thought: African Americans are often associated with music and the arts. So I decided to switch it up a bit... and shine a light on someone who is bringing their brilliance and artistic skills to other areas of endeavor. This is why I am featuring Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, a scientist who is living her purpose through her work on cancer research. Dr. Green is one of fewer than 100 Black female physicists in the United States and she recently won “a $1.1 million grant to further develop her patent-pending technology for using laser-activated nanoparticles to treat cancer.” Her passion comes from losing family members to cancer. To learn more about this rock star of science, click here. She may help save your life someday!
