This course will feature LIVE teachings, interactive training sessions, and experiential practices with Andrew. Each session will build harmoniously upon the previous ones, so you’ll develop a complete holistic understanding of the practices, tools, and principles you’ll need to marry the wisdom of the serpent with the innocence of the dove within yourself.
Module 1: The Evolutionary Divine (January 6)
In this opening module, Andrew will show you how being an authentic evolutionary mystic means embracing — with rugged and exalted realism — the full implications of God as One. Nicholas of Cusa said that God is a coincidence of opposites. What this means is that the Divine as One works in its manifestation with extreme opposites that are secretly and mysteriously interrelated to give birth to astounding evolutionary transformations.
Great evil can birth unprecedented good. Good without realism can birth unexpected evil. Transcendence and imminence, light and dark, dance together in a mystery whose laws only become accessible to those prepared to surrender to it.
Understanding this extraordinary dance of opposites within the One is revolutionary because it means honoring horror, agony, chaos, and destruction as just as sacred as joy, order, and beauty. Accepting this dance in God means learning how to embrace, accept, integrate, and celebrate all sides of the divine and its working with an absolute surrender that prepares you to be guided by the secret impulses of an evolution that can divinize the human. Andrew will illustrate that this is the first fundamental revelation of the marriage of the wisdom of the serpent and the innocence of the dove.
In this first module, you’ll explore:
- The authentic nature of oneness
- The authentic nature of true nondual acceptance and awareness
- The authentic nature of the unity of opposites
- The evolutionary possibilities of the dance of opposites
- The practice of the Name of God, which builds the awareness that can hold the extremity of the dance
Module 2: The Marriage of the Wisdom of the Serpent & the Innocence of the Dove (January 13)
In this transmission, Andrew will unpack Jesus’ astounding teaching that to truly embody evolutionary divine consciousness, we need to marry at all the levels of our being the wisdom of the serpent and the innocence of the dove.
He will show that the wisdom of the serpent has three different and paradoxical meanings. The first is that the wisdom required to embody divine consciousness has to be born out of an illusionless confrontation with the shadow. The second is that just as the serpent renews itself endlessly, the wisdom of evolution shows us that there is no end to the transformations possible in the Divine. The third is that the serpent also represents the divine energy called Kundalini, coiled in the first chakra and awakened by grace to flood the body and mind with divinizing power.
Andrew will also show that the innocence of the dove has its own three different, but related, divine gifts. The dove is an emblem of the all-creative and all-transforming Divine White Light. It’s also a messenger of that light, bringing an astounding message of the next level of evolutionary truth. And the dove is also a sign of the transformative peace and harmony that will be born when this next level of embodied truth is established.
Andrew will explore the extraordinary range, power, and beauty of the evolutionary divine consciousness that is formed by this marriage, and will celebrate its power to deal with reality as it is, without any fantasy or illusion, while also working soberly and exaltedly to transmute reality. It is this consciousness, he will show you, that births embodied divine humanity and a new world.
In this module, you’ll discover:
- The 3 powers of the wisdom of the serpent
- The 3 gifts of the innocence of the dove
- The nature of supermind, which can affect the marriage of both kinds of consciousness
- The power and wisdom released by this marriage into reality
- A sacred heart practice drawn from Christian mysticism
Integration Session 1 (January 20)
This first of four integration sessions will begin with a short centering practice.
You’ll then dive into an in-depth conversation with Andrew about the teachings in the first two modules — and have the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences arising in you.
What reactions have you noticed in yourself these last two weeks? How can you take the foundational wisdom you’ve been learning and apply it to your life?
You’re welcome to bring your questions and reflections with you as you connect with Andrew and your fellow participants during this session.
Integration sessions are the key to absorbing this challenging material at a deep and personal level. Andrew finds that when he guides students personally, everyone who is a part of the course and listening is also instructed, encouraged, and awakened. Nothing is more important to Andrew than participating with his students in this intimate manner; he believes that the way information is most richly shared is not between guru and disciple, but between heart friends.
Module 3: Transmuting the Dark Night (January 27)
This is the first of three transmissions that will deal in detail with the wisdom of the serpent as the wisdom of the shadow. Andrew will show that the marriage of the wisdom of the serpent and the innocence of the dove builds in the seeker a vast spacious consciousness that can hold extreme opposites without being terrified or paralyzed by what it sees of the dark side of the Divine and of human nature.
Andrew will relate this to the terrifying Dark Night that the world is now plunged into, which is the defining evolutionary ordeal of humanity. He will explore in detail the five different laws of the Dark Night that he has learned from personal experience and from his study of world mysticism and will demonstrate how the dove’s expansive wisdom enables the seeker to see in each of these terrifying laws the seeds of an opposite transforming radiant possibility.
What this astonishing vision makes possible to the evolutionary mystic is a grand, calm, and majestic understanding of the shattering process of the Dark Night as also a potential birthing process of a new humanity. He will show how this vision also enables seekers to align with the transforming possibilities of the Dark Night to birth themselves into a new unified reality and so become “warrior midwives” of the new world that the evolutionary Divine is offering us.
In this module, you’ll explore:
- The nature of sublime equanimity that can hold extreme opposites
- The evolutionary meaning of the Dark Night process
- The 5 laws that interrelate and act in the Dark Night process
- The transforming possibilities these 5 laws can activate
- The Ramana Maharshi practice of Who Am I, which enables radical experience of the self both as the dance of opposites and as the transcendent beyond all opposites
Module 4: Transmuting Shadows of the Dark Night (February 3)
In this transmission, Andrew will help us confront head on the five major shadows that our unprecedented global Dark Night is now casting on every human psyche and that needs to be made conscious. These five shadows are disbelief, denial, dread, disillusion, and death wish.
The demand of the wisdom of the serpent is to understand and accept in radical depth how each of these shadows arise both separately and together.
It is only when these shadows are recognized, brought into, and healed by divine consciousness and compassion... that they do not sabotage each of our well-meaning attempts to transform and heal our frightening situation.
When we discover that these devastating shadows are not omnipotent and can be used as wisdom fuel for a deeper knowledge of our predicament and what we are up against both in ourselves and in the exploding world situation, we become far wiser, far more compassionate, far more astutely skillful, and far more able to involve with the help of divine grace solutions that are truly effective.
Andrew will demonstrate in detail how each of these shadows can become our great friends and help us as we struggle to birth ourselves into embodied divinity and co-create with the Divine a new world.
This week, Andrew will share with you:
- How the unprecedented Dark Night that we are in casts unprecedented and dangerous shadows
- The nature and depth of each of the 5 shadows
- The way that making such shadows conscious engenders compassion, wisdom, and skill
- The way in which facing these 5 shadows drives the evolutionary mystic into deeper divine awareness and practice
- The Tibetan practice of Tonglen, which enables you to work from the freedom of your divine self on the shadows in your human self as they arise
Integration Session 2 (February 10)
In this second session for integration with Andrew and your classmates, you’ll delve deeper into what you’ve been learning as you ask Andrew your questions and share your thoughts and experiences.
And just as importantly, you’ll listen to — and learn from — your classmates’ reflections and insights as you discover more about them and their experiences.
Module 5: Transmuting the Shadows of the Modern Human Ego (February 17)
In this transmission, Andrew will look unsparingly in honor of the wisdom of the serpent at our contemporary human ego, the ego that is driving our Dark Night of chaotic greed, nihilistic denial, and secret desperation. He has identified seven essential and interlinked shadows that all modern human beings share in one way or another, and will go into detail about each of them.
He will show how embodied divine consciousness reveals that in each of the shadows, primal wounds are crying out to be healed and can be healed in such a way that they flower into radiant support for a new awareness of reality.
Andrew will concentrate on the greatest shadow of all, our near-terminal narcissism, to show how narcissism is a tragic and diluted misinterpretation of the real truth that becoming the Self reveals... the truth that we are, in fact, the center of reality — not in the ego, but in enlightened consciousness.
What this demonstrates is the way the innocence of the dove that knows divine secrets and mysteries can heal even the most dangerous of our addictive behaviors.
This week, you’ll explore:
- The dangerous 7 shadows that constitute our contemporary human ego and propel its destructiveness
- The way in which each of these shadows, when made conscious, can engender its transforming opposite
- The true relationship of the transformed ego to the awakened self
- The divine power and compassion this relationship makes possible
- A Sufi practice of remembrance that enables the seeker to hold to divine consciousness while doing the grueling work of making the 7 shadows conscious
Module 6: A Warning & Celebration of the Path to Engoldenment (February 24)
In this transmission, Andrew will unveil the 4-part path of engoldenment that he has learned from the great evolutionary mystics. He will concentrate on the difficulties and dangers that arise at each stage of this path so that the seeker who longs for transfiguration can approach the journey with exaltation and profound sober humility.
Without an astute and illusionless understanding of the dangers inherent in the evolution of the new human being, any birth of a new humanity is simply not possible. Idealism and naiveté may sound thrilling to the uninitiated, but to those who know the rigors, pitfalls, and sometimes ferocious challenges of the real path, they are extremely dangerous.
Andrew will bring together in this transmission as clearly as possible what 40 years of traveling this evolutionary path and studying the great evolutionary mystics have offered him — to help seekers pursue divine embodiment with as clear a map as possible.
In this module, you’ll explore:
- A vision of what engoldenment is
- A force-gauge map to the realization of engoldenment
- A clear warning of the challenges and dangers that each stage of the unfolding of the map reveals
- Profound sacred advice drawn from the depths of the mystical traditions as to how to recognize and pass through these dangers
- A practice of using the Mother’s Golden Light to birth your divine human
Integration Session 3 (March 3)
In this third session for integration with Andrew and your classmates, you’ll delve deeper into what you’ve been learning as you ask Andrew your questions and share your thoughts and experiences.
And just as importantly, you’ll listen to — and learn from — your classmates’ reflections and insights as you discover more about them and their experiences.
Module 7: The New Sacred Activism (March 10)
In this module, Andrew will show that the vision of sacred activism that he is offering for the birth of a new humanity is itself a marriage of the wisdom of the serpent and the innocence of the dove, a marriage of an unflinching confrontation with the darkness and injustice of our time fused with an exalted knowledge of the divine human birth that is possible.
He will demonstrate that authentic sacred activism entails making conscious the shadow both of the mystic and of the activist in us.
The mystic shadow is one of addiction to transcendence and the activist shadow is an addiction to self-righteous doing. Both are fatally flawed and cannot on their own birth a new humanity — as they’ve traditionally been imagined and lived. The transforming news, however, is that if you fuse together the best of the mystic (the innocence of the dove) with the best of the activist (the wisdom of the serpent), a new human being is engendered who will be empowered to act from a new sacred consciousness and with tremendous supple wisdom and divine power.
Andrew will show how the wisdom of the serpent demands that we protect our sacred activism by understanding without illusion the dark forces that are ranged against its possible success. Andrew will end the transmission with a vision of how this protection can best be employed so that the seeker who has now married the wisdom of the serpent and innocence of the dove can go forward and give their life passionately and shrewdly for the birth of a new world.
In this module, you’ll discover:
- The nature of sacred activism as a potentially transfiguring marriage of opposites
- The nature of the shadow of the mystic
- The nature of the shadow of the activist
- The new consciousness formed by the marriage of the best of the mystic with the best of the activist
- A prayer and Rose Light practice of protection drawn from the secret Islamic tradition
Final Integration Session (March 17)

About Andrew Harvey
Andrew Harvey is an author, speaker, and founder/director of the Institute of Sacred Activism, an international organization focused on inviting concerned people to take up the challenge of our contemporary global crises by becoming inspired, effective, and practical agents of institutional and systemic change in order to create peace and sustainability.
Andrew has taught at Oxford University, Cornell University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and the University of Creation Spirituality as well as at various spiritual centers throughout the U.S. He was the subject of the 1993 BBC documentary The Making of a Modern Mystic, and appears also in Rumi Turning Ecstatic and The Consciousness of the Christ: Reclaiming Christ for a New Humanity.
He is co-author of the bestselling The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, and has worked with the great Iranian Sufi dancer Banafsheh Sayyad in producing a film, In the Fire of Grace, which marries Sufi-inspired dances to the stages of Rumi’s understanding of the path of divine love. He has written or edited over 30 books and received many awards, including the Benjamin Franklin Award and the Mind Body Spirit Award.
