All over the world, music provides healing and spiritual growth. It’s the magical soundtrack to many aspects of our lives.
In most cultures, there’s music for every occasion, from birth through death. There are songs for celebrations, religious rituals and ceremonies, seasons, time of day, and celebrating answered prayer.
It’s no surprise that playing and creating your own music has been used for centuries as a form of personal expression and spiritual growth.
No matter what is going on in the world around us, music reminds us that there’s always beauty and balance, harmony and wholeness, refuge and sanctuary.
This is your opportunity to enrich your soul by making music regardless of skills or aptitude.
When you join music therapist Christine Stevens for this 7-week musical journey, you’ll learn to play the Native American style flute in both the traditional and scales from around the world — for personal development, spiritual growth, connecting to nature, and so much more...
You don’t need to know how to read music or play the Native flute — Christine will guide you to use the flute to express what’s inside you, removing any self-limiting blocks so your soul’s own music can shine through.
Along the way, you’ll discover that there are no wrong notes when playing the natural pentatonic scale.
Each week, you’ll explore a new scale from a different part of the world to help you connect with various aspects of yourself and the larger world. Each scale carries a unique quality and tone that awakens different emotions and energies within you.
There are bonus tracks for practicing improvisational playing each week and a simple song to learn that incorporates each week’s tonality. By changing one note, you will discover the greater sonic possibility within your flute.
In this 7-week course, you will learn the 7 hidden scales within the Native Flute you may not have known existed. By changing one note, you will access different cultures, sound healing traditions, and energetic states.
Imagine being able to play your flute to experience bliss, meditation, resilience, and gypsy spirit and balance the inward and outward states of life.
When you play the flute, you fall into heart-centered consciousness. It is a gift to immerse the soul in song — its natural state.

From the traditional Native scale in both the lunar and solar modes to the Blues scale, from the medieval Lydian scale to the Byzantine scale, and from the ZEN temple scale of Japan to the blissful scale of Bali… you’ll explore how the tonality and notes of each of these scales make you feel down to your core. This is your golden opportunity for sonic expression without all the hard work.
As you learn these scales, you’ll discover the beauty that flows through us as what we play is a mirror of the world we wish to cultivate within.
As a long-time student of world culture and sound healing traditions, Christine brings you scales she has learned from her global travels into sacred sound traditions of Japan, Bali, New Orleans Blues and the Arabic World. She holds master’s degrees in both social work and music therapy — and inspires people worldwide with her message that music promotes health, spirituality, wellness, and cross-cultural connection.
She’s played her flute for healing in the war zone of Iraq and disaster areas, including Hurricane Katrina and Middletown fires, battered women in shelters in Iraq, and refugee women living in El Cajon.
Now you can spend seven weeks with Christine, experiencing for yourself how the flute can help you connect with others, with nature, and with Spirit.
Get ready to discover how to use this magical instrument as a joyous vehicle for self-expression and spiritual growth!

Each session will build harmoniously upon the previous ones, so you’ll develop a complete holistic understanding of the practices, tools, and principles you’ll need to artfully express your soul’s calling through the Native flute… gain confidence playing musical scales from around the world… and further your spiritual journey through global flute music.

As soul players of the Native flute, we receive many benefits from playing the traditional scale, which resonates with the Earth.
From healing breathwork to spiritual connection, the beauty that flows through us as we play is a mirror of the world we wish to cultivate within.
The Native flute speaks to the upper world where both sun and moon reside in the palace of sky.
In this balance of light and dark, brightening and deepening, we begin our exploration of soul playing in this experiential course.
In this session, you’ll:

The Cry of the Soul demands to be heard. It is the voice the goddess Innana heard deep in the underworld that led her on a hero's journey to becoming the queen of heaven and earth.
What is your soul hungry for? How does music feed your soul? How can we bring forth that longing sound that validates the dark times of the soul? We experience the alchemy of turning pain into song when we play the blues.
In this session, you’ll:

Imagine yourself in a misty forest covered in moss, with the sound of streams and birds. Light plays on the mist, revealing windows of nature’s beauty. As the fog rises, you become the voice of the magic and mystery that lives in the magic hour of dawn and dusk.
By adding one simple note to the traditional scale, we transform the tamber and tonality of the flute to evoke an ear of curiosity and something new to explore within yourself.
When you play this scale with your flute, you’re a magical being, a force of enchantment.
In this session, you’ll:

There’s a scale that begins in the middle of the flute, and it represents the balance of above and below, like the crown and the roots of the redwood trees.
These trees are known for their resilience and ability to withstand fire, and they demand a scale that matches their gift in the forest.
When we play in Mode 4, we break through the need to cover the third hole or use a strap.
With all the notes open, you’ll experience the breakthrough of resurrecting an entirely different song through your flute.
Like discovering a resilient part of yourself (that you hadn’t realized was there) during hard times, this scale resides within the flute without us knowing its full power… until we play it.
In this session, you’ll:

If the flutes of the world could talk to each other, the Byzantine scale would likely include the exotic dialect of this scale played to syncopated rhythms.
In the Arab world, this scale might accompany the poems of Rumi and Hafiz, the swirling rhythms of the Sufis, and the sounds of freedom in the Arab spring.
When you listen to this scale, your soul comes alive as it hears the sacred geometry that tamed snakes and spoke to the creepy crawlers.
With only one note change, a whole new tonality emerges as we travel the Silk Road of cross-cultural harmony and appreciation.
This module will take your playing to a global scale.
In this session, you’ll:

In the tradition of the shakuhachi, a Japanese flute played by monks in Zen temples from Kyoto to Kamakura — where Japanese temples have survived as living treasures — the ego-less style of this scale will quiet your mind.
Played slowly in a meditative style, each note emerges as if it were a scroll on the altar — a kanji character — or a haiku in honor of nature’s beauty.
This 5-note scale is all about elimination. Less is more. Notes are removed to create space, which is the hallmark of Zen Buddhism.
In this session, you’ll:

The traditional flute of Bali is called the suling, which is made from bamboo. It only has four holes, which is all that’s needed to play this 5-note scale.
Christine has translated this scale to the Native American flute based on her travels to this shamanic Hindu Buddhist culture.
What makes this scale a pathway to bliss is its unique tonality of major sounds. Notes that would normally create tension somehow sound resplendent instead.
The scale is cheerful and is used in ceremonies for dancing, making offerings, celebrating the protector spirits… and all things that feed the soul.
And now, you’ll become part of this sound stream, connecting to a culture that believes that heaven is on Earth.
In this session, you’ll:
In addition to Christine’s transformative 7-week virtual course, you’ll receive these special bonuses to complement the course and take your understanding and practice to an even deeper level.

In this healing flute performance, Christine guides you through a 10-minute process of connecting to three different flutes. As you listen, you’ll tune the energy centers of what Christine calls your own human instrument — your body and your being. As the life-breath moves through the flute, your grief, fears, and pain move through and out of you. You’ll feel the healing effects of the flute as you expand your awareness, open your heart, and reflect on a new song for your life.

Discover various forms of energy and healing from three diverse instrument types — percussion, flute, and guitar. Watch and listen as three master sound healers and musicians, Mary Youngblood, Guillermo Martinez, and Bodhi Setchko, share their celebrated gifts. The total value of these Sound Healing Summit sessions added together are worth more than most Shift courses. Add these to your library and return to them whenever you need a boost.

Listen to this powerful audio and experience drumming as a practice that encourages whole-body healing. Research shows that drumming reduces anxiety, depression, and inflammation while improving social resilience. Christine’s drumming vibrations promote healing, blood flow, and vitality — helping boost your energy, empower your ideas, and actualize your creative freedom.

Explore and enjoy over 20 poems written by Christine. As you read the enlivening ballads, you’ll be invited to reflect upon the beauty, resilience, and inspiration of flute playing. These poems were inspired by Christine’s journey of playing her flute for healing in war zones and disaster areas, for battered women and witnesses of genocide, for surviviors of fires and hurricanes, and much more.

Neuroscience has found that improvising music in the moment — without trying to read musical notation — yields many neurological benefits. These nine tracks feature rhythms to support improvising with all the scales in the course. They were recorded in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, using traditional instruments, including hand drums and rattles.

This workbook shares the basics of flute playing in an engaging, inspiring format with plenty of space for insights along the path of the flute. Discover the scales written in notation and pictorial flute finger positions, and songs written in NAF TAB notation. Plus, you’ll be invited to respond to 14 journaling questions for self-reflection along the way.

Christine is a wonderful teacher, especially for those who are beginning or stalled out in their flute journey. She gives many ways to get out of your head and just play for the fun of it.
— Mary S., Lakewood, Colorado
Christine's flute courses have brought me a true sense of community. I have gained in skill and confidence and have experienced a real sense of peace and joy playing my flute. I am impressed with the talent and compassionate nature of Ms. Stevens’ presentations.
— Cooper Gallegos, Placitas, New Mexico
This course added joy to my life during a time of isolation and loss of connection with friends and family during the pandemic. Christine made learning to play less intimidating and allowed me to make a heart connection with the instrument. Sometimes my only audience was the backyard birds and squirrels. My husband now looks forward to hearing me play.
— Denyse, Falls Church, Virginia
This course has been a continuation of the amazing journey I’ve had since the very first class with Christine through The Shift Network. I now have a way to truly express myself through an instrument in ways in which words can only aspire. It has been — and continues to be — a deeply healing experience for me to trust that bearing my soul in this way not only benefits me, but also allows others to truly see me. When we share ourselves in this way, it benefits us all.
— Karen H., Asheville, North Carolina
The calling comes and if you respond and open to this opportunity it will change you forever. Christine is deeply passionate and knowledgeable, and it is contagious. Her deep reverence for her journey, teachers, and spirit are integrated with such a cheerful energy you have no choice but to dive right in. No experience is necessary to open your heart to this beautiful experience. I have connected to something so much deeper than anything I could learn from a course. Thanks to Christine and her passion to connect us all with our heart song.
— Lisa St. Pierre, Ontario, Canada
I enjoyed Christine's exuberance and enthusiasm. She got me to play my flute every day for the last seven weeks. I even got a new Native American flute. I plan to review all the materials. She is very generous in the sharing of her resources. The course increased my enthusiasm in pursuing my other musical interests, i.e. playing my trombone.
— John Stone Malden, Massachusetts
This music is medicine for my soul and beauty and blessing I can share with others. It is a beautiful meditation practice and a path to befriend my emotions in the good times and the grief times.
— Lindy Burnham, Fort Collins, Colorado

— Barbara Goddard, Rockport, Massachusetts
I feel freer in playing the flute, more expressive. Christine's method of teaching made “practice” more fun and various techniques are making their way into my playing. It sort of switched my learning gears and it feels easier to learn, play flute, and — certainly — to improvise.
— Mary S, Denver, Colorado
