Everyday movements that once felt effortless can gradually become uncomfortable, restricted, or even painful.
Getting out of a chair may require a little extra effort. Turning your head might feel stiff. Walking, reaching, or simply finding a comfortable position to sit can become things you do with increasing caution and awareness.
It's easy to assume these changes are simply an inevitable part of getting older. But what if they're not? What if much of the tension, stiffness, and discomfort you've come to accept is actually the result of unconscious muscle patterns your brain has learned over time — patterns you can begin to recognize, release, and change?
Martha Peterson, founder of Essential Somatics®, has spent decades helping people understand and change these very patterns through Clinical Somatic Education.
In this free hour-long online event, she'll introduce you to this gentle yet powerful approach, showing you how to recognize the patterns contributing to your discomfort, understand how they've developed, and experience what it feels like to move differently.
Whether you're dealing with chronic pain, sciatica, scoliosis, or neck and shoulder tension — or simply want to preserve your mobility, confidence, and independence — you may not need to push harder, stretch more, or completely change the way you move.
You may simply need to rediscover something your body has gradually forgotten: how to move without unnecessary tension and effort.
Your body is capable of far more ease and freedom than you may realize. And the path toward experiencing that doesn't have to begin with a major undertaking. Sometimes, it starts with noticing one small thing — and discovering just how much that can change.
Drawing on decades of teaching experience, Martha brings a rare depth of insight to this work. She'll share sequences from the somatics tradition, including rarely taught exercises that can open up surprising new possibilities for greater ease, comfort, and freedom of movement. They're also profoundly effective — and a lot of fun, according to her students!
Life is not linear, and neither are our bodies. The patterns of tension and pain we carry develop over a lifetime of experiences, habits, stresses, injuries, and adaptations. And just as these patterns don't develop overnight, unwinding them is a process of discovery, not a straight line.
To help you experience this for yourself, Martha will guide you through a series of functional assessments that reveal how your body actually moves — and where you may be working harder than necessary.
You'll begin by walking normally, noticing the comfort, speed, and balance of your gait. Then Martha will guide you through a pandiculation exercise, showing you how to "put the reflexes on yourself," one at a time, and experience how releasing habitual muscle contractions can influence your balance, coordination, stride, and the effort it takes to move.
You'll also discover what it feels like to stand up from a chair with greater ease. And you'll take a closer look at something as familiar as picking up your phone — noticing where you're looking, how you're positioning your face, head, and neck, and what happens when you bring your awareness to your neck, chest, and belly. You may be surprised by how much this everyday habit influences your breathing and the tension you carry.
Join Martha and discover how small, manageable shifts in awareness can begin to transform the way you move and feel. Because sometimes, noticing just one thing can shift everything.
